Who Does Gant Represent?

H.J. Timmermans wrote this letter to the Daily Sun News.  I couldn’t have said it better myself:

The past couple of days I read the reports in the Daily Sun News on the city of Sunnyside employees’ wages and the response of the city council.
First off, what blows my mind is the statement Councilman Bill Gant made: “Quite frankly, I am getting a little tired of hearing about the citizens. A lot of times citizens choose crappy lifestyles which lead to crappy lives, and that’s the choice they make.”
Wow! Who does he think he is representing? Is it the citizens or is it the city employees?
Does he realize that we are living in a moderate to low income area? This is not Seattle, Chicago or New York, for sure.
Has Mr. Gant ever been self-employed like many of us? The self-employed person has no guaranteed annual income. It varies from year to year.
Are we, the self-employed, among the crappy citizens who choose crappy lifestyles? The self-employed do not have any benefits. The self-employed pay all the fees, the taxes and many other business expenses that need to be paid every month, including expenses to keep the city going.
Come on now, get a life, man.
All we ever hear about is raising taxes and raising wages. Maybe all of the city employees should volunteer to accept a 10 percent cut in their wages for two years to balance the budget. If all of the local, state and federal employees would agree to a reduction in pay instead of an increase in pay, we could come close to balancing many budgets.

Sunnyside Mean Household Income $27,583

Lowest Paid Receptionist for the City of Sunnyside Makes $31,656

For reference see the salaries article in the Daily Sun News from 10/27/08.

According to the 2000 US Census, Sunnyside, Washington, had a mean household income of $27,583.  35% of the population lives in poverty.  46% of Sunnyside children under 18 live below the poverty line.  These figures are important to keep in mind as we compare them to how our poor, overworked city employees have to scrape by.  The city staff only work four days a week.  That’s right…four whole days.  How many days do you work in a week?  If you are like most Americans it will most likely be more than four.  O.K.  That wasn’t fair of me, was it?  After all, the poor civil servants at Sunnyside City Hall don’t make much money, so at least they get a break in only working 80% of even bankers hours.

The public school teachers, of course, get decent compensation.  For the complete table of teacher salaries, go here.  A teacher with no experience at all, will bring home almost $33,000 the first year.  This puts them significantly ahead of the median household income for the city.  Not that I am complaining about this, seeing as how a teacher must have a four year degree, and other qualifications.  (Also, I am the spouse of a schoolteacher and directly benefit from government largess in this area.)

Recently, the local McDonald’s started running ads in the Daily Sun News advertising the position of Store Manager, with starting pay around $31,000.  You can bet that the manager will be expected to put in more than four days a week in that position!  In addition, they will have to supervise others, and not just sit by answering the phone when it rings.  The Store Manager does not necessarily need a four year degree, but McDonald’s is famous for its Hamburger University, a college level management training course.  Is it just me, or does it seem like the lowest paid receptionist for the City of Sunnyside has a pretty good deal going on here?  I do not know if a four year degree is required to answer the phone for the City.  Perhaps, someone would be kind enough to share that with me in the comments section of the blog.

Multiple patrol officers bring home $50,000+, without having to supervise anyone.  Firefighters and paramedics are making $46,000+.  Even maintenance workers are making $44,000+.  This is happening when the mean household income is $27,583?  You bet it is.

Consider what Bill Gant, a career government employee before becoming a City Council Member had to say at last night’s meeting:

”Quite frankly I’m getting a little tired of hearing about the citizens. A lot of times citizens choose crappy lifestyles which lead to crappy lives and that’s the choice they make.”

I guess the 46% of those under 18 living below poverty have crappy lives because of the choices they have made.  I suppose private employers don’t pay as much in salaries and benefits as the City of Sunnyside because business owners and citizens have decided crappy lives are better.

Or perhaps our decision to elect people like Bill Gant to City Council is making our city crappy.  By the way, Mr. Gant, you and the rest of City Council have yet to balance the budget.

U.S. Has Plundered World Wealth With Dollar

This is the headline from a recent Reuters article, which you can follow the link to at the end of this post.  It seems the Chinese are upset about how our government is manipulating the markets for its own self-interest.  How is this possible?  Our Federal Reserve System, of course.

The Chinese, who benefit from a massive trade surplus with the US, have been taking their proceeds and buying dollar denominated assets.  Now, they rightly are starting to question whether we will have the ability to ever repay all our burgeoning national debt.  The ChiComs don’t like to be screwed any more than the American middle class does, but unlike us, they can do things outside the US Government control.

They want to begin building a New World Financial Order, built around currencies other than the dollar.  Why should this be of concern to us?  Because when we go to borrow money in the future, it will cost us considerably more in interest to do it.  The Federal Reserve will not be able to pay it off by running the printing press a few extra hours a day.

A return to the gold standard would be the best plan of action, as the gold supply can not be manipulated by any one government in the international community.  The Chinese have apparently figured out that good ole Uncle Sam is manipulating its money supply, and they now want to start a new system.  This again shows that the ultimate future for paper based currency is in inflation, and destruction of the currency itself.  Let us take the opportunity to back our currency with something of value.  Let’s get back on the gold standard.

Ron Paul Promises To Return When Country Needs Him Most

This is from our friends at The Onion.  They took time to roast Ron Paul this week:

October 24, 2008 | Issue 44•43

WASHINGTON—After piling the last of his Campaign for Liberty signs in the back of a beat-up Ford truck Thursday, Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) once again abandoned his candidacy for president and rode on out toward the low western sun, but not before vowing to come back to Washington “when [the country] is ready.” “When the river swirls and the wind blows, and when uncontrollable inflation forces us to revert to the gold standard, and the Federal Reserve bank is exposed as the unconstitutional, neofascist cabal it really is, you’ll see me coming over that hill,” said Paul, leaving a dusty cowboy hat and a stack of “no” votes on his seat in the House of Representatives. “But don’t you fret, America. If you ever feel like your government is getting too big or too intrusive, just give a little whistle, and there I’ll be. I’ll be there quicker’n you can spit.” Although no one has seen or heard from the Texas congressman since Thursday, sources report the Ron Paul for President campaign has gained an additional $2.3 million in contributions since his disappearance.

Should Minimum Wage Be Adjusted For Inflation?

No – And Higher Wages Should Not Be Adjusted For Inflation Either!

Recently the issue of minimum wage has come up in the Washington State Governor’s Race.  Dino Rossi is accused of wanting to cut the minimum wage, a charge he denies.  Apparently, the controversy is about having a different minimum wage for minors vs. adults.  Our friends to the north in Canada have a different minimum wage for minors than they do for adults; and this argument may make some sense.  Our government regulates the workplace more strictly for minors, limiting hours minors can work; as well as tasks that can be performed.  Given this, it would seem to make good sense to have a different minimum requirement for minors than for adults.  Currently, in the state of Washington, most minors get paid the same rate as adults in minimum wage positions, despite doing less work.  This does not make any sense from a business or economic perspective.  I bring this up, because this is part of the reason Washington has the highest minimum wage in the nation.  The Yakima Herald-Republic recently ran an editorial asking for lawmakers to stop the “runaway minimum wage“.

The biggest factor, however, is that under current state law, the minimum wage is adjusted annually to compensate for inflation.  The reason this is done is because of a voter approved initiative that was passed several years ago.  The new increase to be effective 1/1/09 will bring the Washington minimum wage up to $8.55.  The current Federal minimum wage is $6.55 with an increase to $7.25 coming in July 2009.

The biggest problem, as I see it, is not whether or not wages should be adjusted for inflation.  The biggest problem is inflation itself.  The whole reason it is an issue is because of the monetary policy of our Federal Government.  If we did not have inflation, there would not be any pressure to increase prices of goods, or wages of employees, due to weakening of the dollar.  Under the US Constitution, our founding fathers stipulated that currency and coin should be based on gold and silver (Article 1, Section 10).  They did not create a central bank or Federal Reserve System.  If the current system of issuing money does not bother you, consider why it is necessary for the US Government to have legal tender laws requiring banks, businesses, and individuals to take the paper money in circulation.  Prior to legal tender laws, people would only take paper money if it was backed up by something of value.  During the 19th and early 20th centuries inflation was not a significant problem for most people.  In the last 100 years, however, it has taken a toll on the dollar.  For a quick comparison: McDonald’s 1955 price for a cheeseburger was 19 cents.  It is now about $1 for the same item.

Inflation is a tax on the people, just like any other kind of tax.  It is a taking by the government.  There are winners and losers in the inflation game.  If you are paid wages for the work you do, you are being cheated out of the value of your pay by inflation.  This is morally wrong.  The voters of Washington understand this, and most people around our country do too.  Most businesses and local governments give employees annual raises based partly on the cost of living.  Some business owners are prompted by government regulation to do this, such as in the voter approved minimum wage initiative passed in Washington.

What it boils down to is this: the voter approved initiative in Washington was a public rebuke of DC having inflationary policies in the first place.  It is my belief that all wages should be adjusted based on the value an employee brings to a business.  I don’t believe we should have inflation, and that is why I don’t think we should adjust people’s wages for inflation.

We are not powerless, and do not have to accept inflation in our society.  We can push our Congress and President to change this policy.  One way to start, is to ask our elected officials to support an audit/review of the Federal Reserve.  Until we begin to seriously consider the damage the current system is doing to our money, we will continue the movement towards the zero dollar:

Colin Powell’s Endorsement

What can I say about Colin Powell’s endorsement of “The One” that has not already been said?  Fans of “The One” were pleasantly surprised, and Republicans were shocked.  In the last couple of days we have heard talking heads on the news give their impressions, and also talkers on the radio giving their takes as well.  So why I am doing a blog entry on this?  Well, it’s personal to me, and it’s my blog, so I get to do what I want!  :)

When I was still in high school, the first Gulf War erupted in its full, what is now considered brief, fury.  Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait; Saudi Arabia was presumed to be his next target.  Much of the world’s supply of oil was up for grabs.  The oil-rich, militarily-weak, regimes of the Persian Gulf region could not defend themselves against the threat.  Action was needed to preserve stability.  The U.S. military was called upon to go into action.

Daily press briefings throughout the buildup occurred.  After hostilities between Allied Forces and Iraqis started, the briefings continued.  The chief commander in the field was Norman Schwarzkopf.  The chief commander back at the Pentagon was Colin Powell.  General Powell was on my TV quite a bit in those days.  I developed a healthy amount of respect for him, which continues to this day.  I read his book that was released after his retirement from the military.  I followed his career in the George W. Bush administration.  I watched him carry the water for a new invasion of Iraq.  I saw his briefing to the U.N. (now as Secretary of State).  I saw later, much of the information he presented was based on faulty intelligence.  My perception is that Colin Powell has not forgotten this incident either.  He wants to redeem himself for the sake of history.

From what tidbits I have heard here and there over the years as a consumer of news, it appears Colin Powell was quite upset about being used in this way to promote a war.  A war, which many believe, Powell never really agreed with; but nevertheless, while as a loyal cabinet member, had to act to support the administration to the best of his ability.  It is clear to all, that something caused friction between Powell and other members of the administration, because after two years as Secretary of State, he retired again.  This is one of the things that makes you go: hmmmm.

Powell has always been a moderate.  He favors affirmative action, is pro-choice, and has somewhat liberal views on sex education and distribution of condoms.  Religiously, he is an Episcopalian.  This is something he has in common with George H.W. Bush, under whom he was Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.  I mention this, because in his endorsement, Powell mentioned he was not comfortable with the prospect of more conservative justices being appointed to the Supreme Court.  If you are old enough to remember the elder Bush as President, you will also remember his appointment of David Souter to the Supreme Court.  David Souter is also an Episcopalian and not exactly a conservative on the bench.  George H.W. Bush also appointed Clarence Thomas (who attended an Episcopal church at the time; but later went back to the Roman Catholic Church he grew up in).  However, the overall balance of conservative vs. liberal justices was not significantly altered during that administration.

It has been rumored that G.H.W. Bush has been extremely disappointed in his son’s prosecution of the war in Iraq.  This rumor has credence, because the elder Bush ceased all hostilities once our forces had pushed Iraq out of Kuwait.  He did not want to invade Iraq, and even had our forces withdraw from Iraqi territory they had seized as they pushed north through Kuwait.  Contrast this attitude with the current administration, which is trying to wage wars on two fronts, simultaneously, with a vastly smaller military.  It is my belief, that Powell still holds a grudge about being overruled on the decision to go into Iraq.

During the campaign, two lead candidates emerged.  John McCain, who Colin Powell has known for many years, and “The One”.  John McCain was raised Episcopalian, and remained in that church for many years.  He, like Powell, has had a reputation as a moderate in the Republican Party.  However, in recent years, the Episcopal Church has careened off the road, taking a hard left towards a long political cliff no candidate for President could survive.  Perhaps because of this, McCain, as we have only learned in the last year, is now Baptist.  To help shore up his base, McCain picked Sarah Palin as his V.P.  She is from the right wing evangelical part of the Republican Party.  This apparently, is a wedge driving Powell apart from McCain.  He expressed criticism of the choice of Palin.  Powell has long had a dislike for evangelicals, and I think this has created some discomfort on his part with the Republican Party.  Which brings me back again, to the war in Iraq.  Some of the biggest supporters of the war are evangelical Republicans, who believe our combat troops’ mission is part of God’s Plan.  For those that believe that, no logic or reason can be applied to change their minds on the issue.  They have their minds quite made up, thank you very much.  McCain’s biggest issue where he has differentiated himself from “The One”, is on the war in Iraq.  The McCain/Palin ticket is very much in the same place as the right wing evangelical partisans on this.

Powell, is also a very shrewd man.  He wants to redeem himself, and McCain is behind in the polls with less than a month to go before the election.  “The One”, like McCain, rejected his church for taking a hard left turn off the road (although his church followed black liberation theology, instead of a more general liberal theology that grips the Episcopal church).  However, in the last year, “The One” has not made any announcement of what, if any church, he attends.  He only came to be religious while working with African-American churches as a community organizer.  He has tried to distance himself from religious extremism since getting his party’s nomination.  In terms of spirituality, “The One” is now more moderate than McCain.

It needs to be mentioned, although he denies it, I do believe that race is at least a factor in Powell’s endorsement.

Politically, religiously, spiritually, he sees himself as disconnected from the Republican Party.  He believes that McCain is no longer moderate enough.  He probably has come to resent Palin’s conservative evangelical background, which he most likely associates with those beating the war drum loudest in the current administration.  “The One” has taken a lead in the polls, and Powell believes he will govern in a more moderate fashion, which is more comfortable to him, given his views.  Also, if he is to redeem himself, he needs to do something to get the next President to call on him for his service again.  By choosing to endorse the candidate he sees as the eventual winner, he may just get the chance.

Ron Paul: The People’s Champion

On Friday, 10/17/2008 Dr. Ron Paul was interviewed on CNN.  This is by far one of the better interviews I have seen Ron Paul do in regards to our current economic situation.  In his very articulate manner, he takes some complex issues and boils in down into “living room English” that non-economists can readily understand.  The video of the interview is about 6 minutes long and is well worth the time to watch.  You can watch the video below.  After that, I would suggest visiting the Campaign for Liberty and sign up to get educational information about the Liberty movement.  Freedom is always popular, and the movement is growing.

Glenn Beck Joins FoxNews

It was announced late yesterday that Glenn Beck will be moving his TV show from CNN Headline News over to FoxNews this coming spring.  The Big Story on FoxNews is being cancelled, with Glenn Beck coming on at some point after the election is over.  After seeing this, I may have to start watching FoxNews again; at least every once in awhile.

Glenn Beck is a conservative commentator and humorist.  While he is not overtly Liberty-minded in philosophy, he warmly receives many in the Liberty movement.  He has given significant airtime to both Ron Paul and Bob Barr on multiple occasions.  This is true both of his TV show, and also his radio show.

I am not a regular listener/watcher of Glenn Beck, but in recent weeks have tuned him in and liked his views regarding the mess on Wall Street and the Government Bailout actions in response.  His views are more in tune with a regular guy’s type of attitude than some others out there.  His move to FoxNews gives a little more credibility to a network that claims to be “fair and balanced”.  The “folks” at FoxNews have gotten a little far out on the neocon branch of the tree, that being the branch now exposed as false conservatism.  At this point in time Glenn Beck does not seem to be beholden to any of the “establishment” in the Republican party.  Hopefully, he can maintain some independent thinking after Roger Ailes starts signing his paychecks.

Sunnyside Makes Pre-Emptive Strike Against Novelty Lighters

What?  Are you kidding me?  This is what our City Council spent time on this week?  Are they serious?  Is this for real?  Unfortunately, yes.

The growth of the nanny state continues.  Ever concerned about kids burning themselves, or starting a fire, the City Council made a pre-emptive strike against novelty lighters by banning them.  I say pre-emptive because according to Sunnyside Fire Chief Aaron Markham, that has never happened in Sunnyside.

Whew!  I feel safer already, knowing that this valuable use of City Council time has resulted in more lines in the City Code.  This use of City Council time need not be effective for Council Members to feel good about themselves.  It is all about protecting the children, and safety nazis won’t let anyone be an adult, when the government can be a nanny for all.  It’s not like we should expect parents to control access to lighters and matches.  A ban on lighters is needed, before it’s too late!

Showing bold leadership, the City Council has acted swiftly against what could be used as weapons of mass destruction in Sunnyside.  Launching a pre-emptive strike against this threat; the City Council is showing it believes in the Bush Doctrine whole-heartedly.  Businesses caught selling novelty lighters will be subject to fines, or worse.   These so-called novelty lighters, which some people say can be used for fun; are in fact, when in the little hands of child terrorists, used as incendiary devices to cause damage to themselves and others.  You see, the chemicals contained within these lighters can be used to cause a chain reaction.  A simple spark is all that is needed to start a fire.  Some people say that they are used for peaceful purposes.  Our City Council however, has the wisdom to see through that ruse.  There is simply no way a novelty lighter is going to be used for a peaceful purpose in Sunnyside.  That is why the City Council had to act now, before it is too late.  We can not wait to be attacked by rogue child terrorists wielding novelty lighters as playthings.  For reasons of City Security, the City will be notifying retail stores to rid their inventories of this threat; even extending to street vendors at community events such as Cinco de Mayo.

Accidents have allegedly occurred across the country where a ban is not present.  Rumors persist that child terrorists may accidentally pick up a real gun, thinking it is a novelty lighter, and shoot themselves or others.  Stop laughing.  This is the most important issue for our City Council right now.

We still don’t have a balanced budget, even after reducing the size of our police force.  But this is more important.  Non-profit fire fighting groups are advocating that we take this action immediately.

For reference see the Yakima Herald article: Sunnyside passes novelty lighter ban

And We are Just Getting Started!

Our Congressman in Sunnyside is Doc Hastings.  He voted against the big bailout twice.  He exhibited some moral courage to defy his party leadership and stand on principle.  We have a chance to re-elect him with ballots being mailed in Yakima County right now.  Perhaps as soon as tomorrow you will receive yours.  This is our chance to support candidates like Congressman Hastings who voted against the bailout.  Make your voice heard.  Vote!

The cost of the bailout keeps rising as the Federal Reserve keeps finding new aspects of the market for a government takeover.  The banks are the latest casualties.  The automakers may be next.  In the meantime, see the figures below for a snapshot of the cost so far.

Here are some numbers from the Campaign For Liberty website:
