Wal-Mart Worker Dies In Black Friday Store Rush

From: A Wal-Mart employee died and four others were hurt in the Black Friday rush to get into the Valley Stream store this morning.

This is as sad as it is pathetic.  See the complete story here.

Fairness Doctrine and Regulation of Bloggers?

State of Washington regulators are discussing whether on-line political activism is lobbying, and possibly forcing bloggers to register as lobbyists.  This is a scary proposition for anyone using the Internet as a method to get their message out.  Our society is based on a free flow of ideas, free flow of goods and services in the marketplace, and other freedoms.

This regulatory discussion is taking place at the Public Disclosure Commission (PDC).  It is interesting to note that letters to the editor, and regulation of talk radio are exempt from PDC regulation.  It seems that the PDC is trying to determine who is and who is not a member of the media; that being the criteria they want to use to regulate political activities.

NEWSFLASH!  The 1st Amendment of the U.S. Constitution clarifies our natural right of free speech and prohibits “…abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press…”.  Notice, that freedom of speech is guaranteed to the people and the press.  It does not matter if one is a member of “the media”.  Freedom of speech is freedom of speech.  In addition, the Washington Constitution covers freedom of speech in Section 5, stating “Every person may freely speak, write and publish on all subjects, being responsible for the abuse of that right.”  Notice that this right is for each person and is not dependent on whether one is a member of “the media”.

In other news, discussion of the so-called “fairness doctrine” is being brought up again.  This discussion is most prominent among conservative talk radio hosts, who as a group, stand to lose the most if this regulation is brought back.  In the Daily Sun News, Corey Russell recently wrote a column where he blasted this idea as fear-mongering by right-wingers.  Mr. Russell, please take note that it is not only a concern for right wing talkers.  Ed Schultz, a left wing, “progressive” talk show host is very excited by the possibility of the Obama administration putting the fairness doctrine back into force.  Naturally, radio stations would have to carry programs like his, and drop conservative talkers in the process.  This is not how a free marketplace works.

Wikipedia’s entry on the fairness doctrine documents House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s support of the fairness doctrine saying:

On June 24, 2008, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (who represents most of San Francisco, California) told reporters that her fellow DemocraticRepresentatives did not want to forbid reintroduction of the Fairness Doctrine, adding “the interest in my caucus is the reverse.” When asked by John Gizzi of Human Events, “Do you personally support revival of the ‘Fairness Doctrine?’”, the Speaker replied “Yes.”

The fact that prominent politicians, talk show hosts, and activists are discussing the fairness doctrine should be seriously considered.  Mr. Russell seems to think that only Sean Hannity thinks this will be an issue.  He could not be more wrong.  The Federal Communications Commission did the right thing 20 years ago when they repealed the fairness doctrine.  Political discussion on the airwaves, and especially on the radio, has flourished.  In Washington, the PDC needs to stop talk of regulating political discussion on the Internet.  These types of regulations have a chilling effect on free speech, and can be abused by politicians to stifle opposition to their policies.

The Heritage Foundation has a discussion about the fairness doctrine on their main page.  In 2007, a Heritage blog piece was posted, which you can read here.

The News Tribune has an opinion piece about the PDC’s upcoming meeting to discuss Internet regulation entitled Extending Lobbying Rules To Bloggers Would Stifle Debate

Sunnyside City Budget Hearing

Recently, John Fannin indicated in the Daily Sun News that anyone not making public comments at the City’s Budget Hearing will not be able to complain about the City Budget.  I don’t agree, but perhaps others do.  In any event, only 2/3 of the City Council showed up to the meeting.  If we follow Mr. Fannin’s logic, that means the 1/3 of the Council that did not attend should tender there resignations, as their input is no longer required.

In the last couple of years I have only attended a couple of City Council Meetings, and it is basically pointless to do so.  At the meetings I attended, public comments are not allowed until AFTER  Council has taken action on the agenda items.  Council members show up to the meetings and vote without taking input from citizens.  Mr. Gant recently took some heat for comments made about the citizens of the community, but his failure to attend Budget Meetings is beyond belief.  Mr. Restucci was a no-show as well.  Was this a coincidence or an attempt to avoid taking blame for tax increases that were approved?

There are some things to take notice of in the preliminary budget for 2009.  Because expenses are growing faster than revenue, cuts are going to be necessary.  Council Members Carol Stone and Theresa Hancock seemed to favor a possible freeze in wages for city employees, but they were outvoted on this.  This is important, because the primary reason the budget is out of balance is because employee pay and benefits are growing significantly faster than the City’s economy.  Mr. Gant has stated he believes the raises are necessary despite what the citizens think.  It would be nice to hear his ideas on how to grow the city’s economy to support the raises he favors.  In fact, it would be nice to hear from the other council members how they would like to grow the economy.  I would submit to you, that multiple moratoriums on development are not helping.

In fairness to the City Council, stormwater and sewer tax increases are driven at least in part, by federal and state mandates.  For those of us who have lived in other places, these taxes are nothing new.  The mandates were forced on larger towns first, and now are hitting smaller towns like Sunnyside.  However, the mandates only are a portion of the approved tax increases.  So the City Council has partial responsiblity to take for the tax increases.

Most distressing of all, are the proposed cuts to patrol officers in our community.  Instead of taking police officers off the street, I would suggest cuts in the administration of the Sunnyside Police Department.  Recently, it became public knowledge that the Presidents of Washingston State University, and University of Washington are taking cuts in pay during these tough economic times.  If the heads of the departments in our City Government would do the same, perhaps it would make negotiating a wage freeze easier with their subordinates.  It is time to face the reality that you can only ride the gravy train so far.  The usual way of doing annual pay increases is not an option in the current economy.

Below I am including some comments from our City Manager, Eric Swansen, which were made in the introduction of the 2009 Preliminary Budget.  These comments summarize the proposed cuts being made so that other employees can enjoy their sacred pay increases.

To balance what was a $1.1 Million general fund imbalance, we needed to find serious budget cuts or significant new revenue increases, or a combination of both to bring the budget into balance. The effort to bring this into balance reflects the bulk of the changes for the 2009 budget. These include:

  1. Eliminating 2 of the 4 day shift positions in Police Patrol (2.0 FTEs)
  2. Eliminating the animal services contract
  3. Eliminating 1 Building Plans Examiner position (1.0 FTE)
  4. Eliminating 2 Code Enforcement positions (2.0 FTEs)
  5. Eliminating the Building Secretary/Permit Tech position (1.0 FTE)
  6. Eliminating 1 full-time Parks Maintenance Worker (1.0 FTE)
  7. Eliminating the Recreation Coordinator position (1.0 FTE)
  8. Eliminating the Recreation Assistant position (1.0 FTE)
  9. Reducing seasonal labor in the parks and recreation programs.
  10. Reclassifying the Deputy City Clerk position to an Administrative Assistant servicing Community Development and Building/Code Enforcement functions
  11. Transferring 3 Street Maintenance Workers to the Stormwater Fund (3.0 FTE)
  12. Collecting the 6% sewer utility tax from Port of Sunnyside Industrial Wastewater Treatment Facility customers
  13. Obtaining tentative approval from all six labor collective bargaining units to concede annual vacation buy back provisions in their contracts – in lieu of additional staffing cuts and service level reductions in Police and Parks.

From Freedom To Fascism

Weekend Assignment: Watch this movie!

Aaron Russo’s film “From Freedom To Fascism” is available to watch free of charge on google video.  The full movie runs 109 minutes.  It is worth the time to watch if you have a chance to sit down that long.

How Obama Got Elected

A new documentary film, “Media Malpractice… How Obama Got Elected“, is about to be released which discusses how the media covered the recent election.  It has been apparent for many years how biased the mainstream media is.  However, I didn’t fully appreciate how much effect this had until seeing the film-makers website: www.howobamagotelected.com

The video below was posted on YouTube by a black comedian.  Although I don’t agree with everything said, he makes some good points about what the election means in America, which is why I am linking to it.  Be warned, he uses some language that you will also hear coming from Sunnyside High School kids’ car stereos.  If this offends you, do not watch the video.  I am censoring the title also, but you can figure out what it is:

“F*** white people, Black people ain’t got to do s*** because Obama got elected!”

Automaker Bailout Vote Could Come Today

The latest taxpayer bailout of selected private companies with political influence could be the automakers.  A vote is scheduled for today.  Some Congressmen and Senators are speaking out against it, but the question is whether or not they have the willpower to stand up to the lobbyists.  We saw the recent failure of Congress to serve the public with the $700 billion bailout of the financial industry.  It seems bailouts may  be limited to the money Congress can spend, not on any principles.  Ron Paul was on Headline News speaking about this issue yesterday.

Sunnyside Homicide Suspect

Information below was published in the Daily Sun News.  This is the suspect in the latest gang shooting that occurred in Sunnyside:

Sunnyside Gangs

Do any of these names mean anything to you?

  • Bell Garden Lokotes 13
  • Florencia 13, 64th Street Lokotes
  • Little Valley Lokotes 13
  • Nine Deuce
  • The Ghetto Boyz 13
  • North Side Varrio 14
  • According to nwgangs.com these are active gangs in Sunnyside.

Recently, two teenagers who were identified by police as “gang affiliates” were shot.  For details, go to the article, here.  Apparently, these knuckleheads wear gang colors and want to be gang members, but are not full members.  These idiots took rocks to a gunfight and lost.  Go figure.

I don’t know why ”gangsta rap”, and gang culture is so popular with the youth of this or any other town.(Superintendent Cole identifies both these guys as students in the Sunnyside School District.)  Something is clearly wrong in a community when the gang mentality is so prevalent.  It doesn’t help that we have many Americans that are illiterate today…illiterate in their native language, not to mention English.  Let’s get beyond trying to teach “dual language classes” and try to get some kids that are literate in at least one language.  I have a preference for English, and the Sunnyside City Government does too.

It is unfortunate that these guys got shot.  One fatally.  Where is the outcry from the community?  That this can happen in broad daylight on one of our busiest streets should be a wakeup call.  If we as a community don’t take control of our own streets, these wannabe gangsters will.  Parents need to be involved in the schools, encouraging the kids to do homework, not working the streets.  If a child is involved with a gang, or being recruited for a gang: for the sake of the child and the rest of the community, take charge of the situation.  If you don’t know what to do, get help from others.

Or, if confronting the problem scares you, you can put on body armor when you go to the grocery store.  It’s our choice what kind of town we want to live in.  I like the West, but not the wild, wild West of cowboy novels.  It is time for law and order to be restored.

To sum this up, consider the enlightened words of Toby Keith and Willie Nelson in “Beer For My Horses”:

We got too many gangsters doing dirty deeds
too much corruption and crime in the streets
It’s time the long arm of the law put a few more in the ground
Send ‘em all to their maker and he’ll settle ‘em down
You can bet he’ll set ‘em down
