Sunnyside Gangs

Do any of these names mean anything to you?

  • Bell Garden Lokotes 13
  • Florencia 13, 64th Street Lokotes
  • Little Valley Lokotes 13
  • Nine Deuce
  • The Ghetto Boyz 13
  • North Side Varrio 14
  • According to nwgangs.com these are active gangs in Sunnyside.

Recently, two teenagers who were identified by police as “gang affiliates” were shot.  For details, go to the article, here.  Apparently, these knuckleheads wear gang colors and want to be gang members, but are not full members.  These idiots took rocks to a gunfight and lost.  Go figure.

I don’t know why ”gangsta rap”, and gang culture is so popular with the youth of this or any other town.(Superintendent Cole identifies both these guys as students in the Sunnyside School District.)  Something is clearly wrong in a community when the gang mentality is so prevalent.  It doesn’t help that we have many Americans that are illiterate today…illiterate in their native language, not to mention English.  Let’s get beyond trying to teach “dual language classes” and try to get some kids that are literate in at least one language.  I have a preference for English, and the Sunnyside City Government does too.

It is unfortunate that these guys got shot.  One fatally.  Where is the outcry from the community?  That this can happen in broad daylight on one of our busiest streets should be a wakeup call.  If we as a community don’t take control of our own streets, these wannabe gangsters will.  Parents need to be involved in the schools, encouraging the kids to do homework, not working the streets.  If a child is involved with a gang, or being recruited for a gang: for the sake of the child and the rest of the community, take charge of the situation.  If you don’t know what to do, get help from others.

Or, if confronting the problem scares you, you can put on body armor when you go to the grocery store.  It’s our choice what kind of town we want to live in.  I like the West, but not the wild, wild West of cowboy novels.  It is time for law and order to be restored.

To sum this up, consider the enlightened words of Toby Keith and Willie Nelson in “Beer For My Horses”:

We got too many gangsters doing dirty deeds
too much corruption and crime in the streets
It’s time the long arm of the law put a few more in the ground
Send ‘em all to their maker and he’ll settle ‘em down
You can bet he’ll set ‘em down

Your article is well said. But does the city government of Sunnyside really want english as the main language in this city? I am not sure what this city wants. But, I will say one thing. This city government is no different than AIG, Lehmen Bros., Fannie May or the automakers. They think higher pay for their workers is the answer. This is totally ridiculous. When employees cannot get things done. Then it is time to get rid of them.

I have been rough on two of the city council people. Theresa Hancock and Carol Stone. I must back these two for standing up to the city manager against raises at this time in Sunnyside’s crisis.

I do see grave circumstances arising with the new city manager that this council just hired. Was this man checked out well enough. The biggest management ploy in the history of business is giving employees instant raises out of the taxpayers pockets. This is done to get the employees to like the new manager and respect him for fighting for you. It backfires quite often !

Why is it so easy for councilmembers to give away taxpayers monies? I do believe at next years elections that there may be several council persons removed.

I wonder if it is legal for the city police to have road blocks to check for license, registration, insurance. Then maybe they could search cars for weapoms with just cause. It would be nice to know !

Evidentally these parents of gang members do not love these kids as much as we do our kids. I do not know the culture.

Gangs are everywhere nowadays. Around my way they’re all three letter names. G.B.L. (Gangsters By Law), B.O.S. (Brothers Of Struggle) to name a few. It’s a nation wide problem at this point.

It is unfortunate that gangs are everywhere. The media market for gangsta rap is truly nationwide, and the impressionable youths that see it as glamorous can be found everywhere. It is doubtful the media will stop promoting it; in my view, this issue will have to be dealt with on a local level in hundreds of cities and towns.

I just tried to grab the RSS Feed for this site but it is not properly displaying in Google Chrome. Any ideas?

      • Mickey,
Google Chrome does not have a built in way to subscribe to RSS feeds yet. You can use Google Reader as one alternative though. In my view, fixing the RSS reading abilities of Chrome should be a priority for Google. Thanks for the comment!
