SPRING BREAK STACATION

This week is spring break, so school is out for the kids and the wife.  That means I have honey-do tasks and need to share the computer with others!

As a result, this post is going to be a collection of some random thoughts going through my head right now:

Congratulations to David Taylor for being appointed as State Representative in Washington’s 15th Legislative District!  My thanks go out to Jacob Anderson and Don Vlieger for campaigning hard among the PCOs and commissioners for the state representative seat.  I am glad to have met you both in the process.

Why were there multiple patrol cars cruising around the mall parking lot tonight?  I hope nothing too serious is going on.  In my opinion, we need more police out in the neighborhoods and on the streets.  They are not usually seen, until after something has already happened.  Can we as a City do anything to bolster PREVENTION of crime?  More police officers would help, and staying away from the headquarters building would too.

The City Council needs to do a performance review on the City Manager.  It needs to be done in Executive Session, so if Council Members don’t like the way agendas are done at the last minute, and don’t have items they want on it, the public won’t know he is getting his rear end chewed.  ;)

The City of Sunnyside has new districts for the fall election.  District 1 is Theresa Hancock.  District 2 has Jesse Hernandez and Bill Gant.  District 3 is Carol Stone.  District 4 is wide open for anyone living there to run without an incumbent to challenge.  Garcia, Gehlen, and Restucci will be at-large seats, not up for election for another two years.

To the Church Pastor who e-mailed me recently to let me know they are reading the blog:  Thank you for your words of encouragement!

FAA Wants To Keep Bird Strike Information Secret

The FAA wants to keep information about bird strikes secret from the public.  The issue came up recently, when a commercial aircraft made an emergency landing in the Hudson River, due to birds getting sucked into the engines.  This prompted some to ask how often this sort of thing happens.  The FAA has responded by trying to hide the information from citizens.

This reminds me of a saying: The Cover-Up is Worse Than the Scandal.

The FAA is not doing itself, the Obama Administration, or the public any favors by engaging in secrecy on this.  People are asking legitimate questions, they deserve answers.

Male Circumcision Helps Prevent Two STDs

According to the Associated Press article below, male circumcision helps protect heterosexual men against the AIDS virus by lowering the chance of catching it by up to 60%.  In addition, protection against two other viruses were found: HPV (human papillomavirus) reducing risk by 35%; and herpes by 28%.

The findings are the result of studies done in three African countries, with findings published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Parents contemplating the procedure for their boys often consider religious or traditional reasons in making the decision.  When my youngest son was born, one local doctor informed my wife and I that there was no medical justification for the procedure.  Really?

This most recent study is not the first to show that circumcision can help protect men against certain STD infections.  I am not a doctor, but I know how to “google” a topic to get information on the Internet.

Like many medical procedures, there are advantages and disadvantages.  The decision to procede with something of this nature is as personal as it gets.  Doctors should be sensitive to religious and traditional cultural values when advising patients and parents on medical procedures.  They also should not dismiss research like this most recent study.

When my first son was born, we were fortunate enough to have a doctor that presented both sides of the argument to us.  The decision was ours to make, but he was ethical enough to give us information both for and against.  I wish all those in the medical profession would do the same.

Federal Way Police Chief Hits Car While Looking At Blackberry

The Federal Way police chief has issued a public apology for hitting a car while checking E-mail on a Blackberry.  A reminder to all of us to concentrate on driving!

In 28 years as a police officer, Chief Brian J. Wilson had never had an at-fault accident.  I suspect he will put the Blackberry down next time.

A new Washington state law provides fines of up to $124 for drivers reading a mobile device while driving.  The fine increases to $175 when an accident occurs.

Even the best drivers, with professional training such as police officers, will sometimes get into an accident.  The more time spent on the road, the more likely an accident will eventually happen.  Be careful out there, and keep the shiny side up!

Dumb Crook News: Drug Dealers Shoot Each Other In Grandview

Two unidentified suspects, one from Pasco, the other from Wapato met in Grandview for an apparent drug deal.  They met in the back seat of a Nissan Maxima within 100 yards of a youth soccer practice taking place outside of Smith Elementary School.

Two unidentified females sat in the front seat, while the two stupids sat in the back to apparently “deal”.  Things went awry when the two dumb crooks in the back mutually assured they would not get away.  They shot each other!

The two uh, gun shot victims, were taken to Sunnyside Community Hospital with gun shot wounds.  Police later found a 9mm pistol and a .380 caliber pistol in the car.  They also found about $1,000 of cash and a package of heroin in the car.

Since both of the crooks apparently survived their brush with death, it would seem that we will not be able to nominate them for Darwin Awards.  However, this level of stupidity could still be considered for an Honorable Mention.

Stormwater Tax A Drop In The Bucket Compared To Potential Carbon Taxes

“This would be a regulatory maze far exceeding anything we’ve seen before,” said David Schoenbrod, a professor of environmental law at the New York Law School.

Sunnyside is struggling under the burden of trying to comply with stormwater runoff regulations under provisions of the Clean Water Act.  It has been a hot topic locally, with the City Council, under threat of litigation, temporarily rescinding the tax it had levied.

While City of Sunnyside staff try to come up with a way to comply with the complex regulations, the City has found itself incapable of properly assessing a tax on each individual parcel within the City limits.  Despite ongoing budget problems, which are blamed for the City’s failure to be able to properly tax landowners, the City Council approved additional pay raises for employees at its last meeting.

To be sure, the additional taxes will be a drag on the local economy, as they have been a drag on the American economy since they first started to be implemented years ago.

As if the problems created in D.C. are not enough, the EPA under Obama’s administration is now pursuing a new line of regulatory authority: regulating greenhouse gases.

Both Obama and McCain favored increasing taxes and regulations on greenhouse gases, they just differed on the details of how to do it.  Whether we have a carbon tax, or we try to implement a government run “cap and trade” program, the result will be more taxes, more regulation, and less money in the pockets of American citizens and businesspeople.

The ultimate insult regarding carbon taxes is that human beings are carbon based life forms.  Your very existence will be a taxable event under these proposed regulations.  It is not dependent on your behavior, or how green and environmentally conscious you may be.  If you breathe, you are generating carbon dioxide, which the government will tax.  And no, I am not joking.

Regulations have already been drafted to tax farmers on the number of cows they have.  The flatulence from cows is alleged to cause harm to the environment, and must be taxed.  The next step is to tax human existence as well.

Even supporters of cutting greenhouse gases, like the professor quoted at the top of this post, will admit that the complexity of trying to tax carbon is way beyond that of anything the government is currently regulating.

Business groups such as the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and the National Association of Manufacturers are warning that it could hobble an already weak economy.  Proponents of increasing taxes and regulations say they are doing it for our “health and welfare”.

People will prosper most when the government gets out of the way, and allows us to live our lives in a free society.  These proposed increases in taxes and regulations will make doing business in the USA even more difficult than it already is.  What we would benefit from most, is not just halting growth in government under regulatory burdens, but for the government to simply leave us alone.  Without such interference, farmers, business owners, and job seekers will benefit.  This in turn will help increase the tax base, which will provide for better schools, and make it easier to cover administrative expenses at City Hall.

TOTUS Prime Time Press Conference

TOTUS (Teleprompter of The United States) held a press conference during prime time viewing hours this evening.  Despite pre-empting the popular “American Idol” TV show, Americans were not amused.  Considering that he has previously projected trillion dollar deficits each year for the next four years, he said the deficit would be cut in half in five years!  Who is at fault for the big deficit?

According to the TOTUS, George W. Bush.  Yeah, I know he spent money like crazy, but you and your Democrat Congress have been Bush on steroids when it comes to spending!  Get a grip man, you can’t blame Bush for four years of increasing spending.  Start making cuts now!!

Meanwhile, Tax Cheat Treasurer Tim Geithner has a plan to buy $500 billion of toxic debt (lovingly referred to as “legacy debt” by the administration).  How is that going to help bring the budget into balance you ask?  Too bad our press is too in love with the TOTUS to ask some real questions that matter.

One reporter asked a question about setting up a truth and reconciliation commission for members of the Bush administration.  I thought Desmond Tutu did a good job of that for South Africa, but was unaware of Apartheid in the United States during the last eight years.  Good to know we have the best, unbiased, free press in the world!

Obama Presents $700 Million Plan For Increased Security On Mexican Border

Obama’s new plan provides $700 million to Mexican military and law enforcement agencies to help provide security on the border.  U.S. funds will pay for helicopters and aircraft for the Mexican government.  More U.S. Federal agents and resources will be moved to the border.

Of increasing concern to U.S. officials is the violence in the border region, much of which can be tied to the drug cartels operating in the area.  The plan calls for an increase in the sharing of intelligence between the two countries.

Drug cartel related violence killed 6,500 people in Mexico last year.  Mexican President Felipe Calderon has said the U.S. government needs to take greater responsibility for the demand for drugs, and also the fact that most of the weapons being used by narco traffickers originate in the U.S.

This is starting to smell like the situation in Columbia to me.  Our military has been involved there for many years, with drug cartels controlling large portions of that country.  Mexico appears to be losing control in certain areas to the drug cartels there as well.  Let us hope that following the same type of foreign intervention in Mexico will yield better results than it did in Columbia.
