Comedian Mike Trainor Coming To Tri-Cities

A comedian from New York City, Mike Trainor, will be performing in Tri-Cities this June.  He is scheduled to perform at Jack Didley’s in Kennewick on June 25, 26, and 27.  He has a website at www.giantcomedy.com.

Mike Trainor started following me on Twitter a few days ago.  I checked out his profile, and learned he has appeared on “The Smoking Gun Presents: World’s Dumbest Criminals”

Anybody that incorporates dumb crook style news into a comedy act, is at least worth consideration in my book.  So here I am giving a plug to Mr. Mike Trainor on this blog.  Check out this YouTube video to see what I mean about his take on some dumb crooks:

Is Sonia Sotomayor Really The First Hispanic Nominated To The Supreme Court?

Let me just say at the get-go that I do not understand why being Hispanic, or White, or Black, or any other race would make someone more or less qualified to be a Supreme Court Justice.  However, the racist media seems to always bring up someone’s race, and I feel the need to respond to something that I have seen quoted several times.

Numerous articles I have been reading have been saying that Sonia Sotomayor is the first Hispanic to be nominated to the Supreme Court.  Really?

Benjamin Cardozo, Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court

I am sure they were repeating what was in the press release in order to get a story out quickly.  However, I heard some disagreement from a conservative radio talk show host yesterday.  He was asking about Benjamin Cardozo, a justice appointed by President Hoover.

Cardozo reportedly had Portuguese ancestry, with his forefathers being forced to flee the Iberian Peninsula due to the Spanish Inquisition.  You see, his family was not Roman Catholic.  They were Jewish.

Does this Jewish ancestry mean he was not Hispanic?  I don’t expect the liberal media to provide an answer.  It does not fit into their racial identity politics.

13 Year-Old To Get Chemotherapy After All

Daniel Hauser is a 13 year-old boy from Minnesota.  According to the news stories I have been reading, he has been diagnosed with cancer, and will probably die without chemotherapy treatment.  The story has been making the news because his parents resisted this course of treatment.  A judge ordered that the boy be given chemo against the parents wishes.  The mother apparently took him, and went into hiding.  After being threatened with arrest, and the decent possibility that she would never see her son again, she agreed to go back and allow the doctors to treat the boy with chemo.  A great victory for government, or yet another example of how your body belongs to the state, and not you?

In Washington, voters have approved the so-called “death with dignity” initiative that allows doctors to prescribe lethal doses of medicine to patients.  This allows patients to kill themselves, foregoing the pain and discomfort of failing health, and as the saying goes “die with dignity”.  (I am personally opposed to this initiative and practice, as I feel it violates the doctor’s oath to “do no harm”.)  Here is my question: what if a judge ordered a patient to get a lethal dose of medication, in order to “die with dignity”?

This is not as far fetched as you might think.  Even now, a movement is afoot to nationalize healthcare.  All medical decisions will be vested with a small group, a politburo if you will, in Washington D.C.  They will make all decisions on healthcare.  If chemo is deemed too expensive, then you can “die with dignity”.  The courts, and government officials are, after all, acting in the public’s best interest.  A cost/benefit analysis of your treatment will be done in a government office, where political favors and bribes will influence the outcome.  All in the name of “free” healthcare.

It does not have to be this way.  Historically, courts have held that individuals have the constitutional right to refuse treatment.  Apparently, that right does not exist for the 13 year-old and his family in Minnesota.  In years gone by, medical decisions were between the doctor and patient.  Now we have insurance companies, courts, and government officials messing it up.

Many terminally ill patients decide that they do not want to go into a hospital, and prefer instead to die at home under hospice care, or with family.  Usually, the people making these decisions have lived a good number of years.  In the case of the 13 year-old cancer patient, I think the boy and his family should be given the same options.  It’s their body, their life, and their decision to make.  It should not be up to the government to decide for the people.

Just because their decision would run counter to what most of us would choose, does not give us the right to take away their freedom.

I am praying that Daniel Hauser makes a healthy recovery from his illness.  I am also praying that the government never interferes with, or mandates, what course of treatment that I, or any family member, receive from our doctors.

Netbooks Continue To Fill A Niche

A few months ago, I purchased a Netbook for my own personal use.  My expectations were tempered by the fact that it was a little smaller than a conventional laptop, and had a smaller processor, etc. than the regular computers I have been used to.  However, it is great for taking on the go, checking E-mail, doing on-line banking, and even blogging.  The extreme portability and long battery life make it fantastic for doing about 90% of what I personally do with a computer.

At the time, I remarked to my wife that it seems as if cell phones and computers are on converging paths, where they will ultimately be indistinguishable.  As the smart phones get smarter, e-mail, banking, and blogging can be done from cell phones.  There is still a distinction between a cell phone, and a computer; but it is becoming less and less all the time.  In addition, cellular companies are starting to sell more data services, with voice calls generating a smaller portion of revenue on their networks.

While recently surfing the Radio Shack website, I stumbled upon a Netbook being marketed with AT&T 3G Internet service included.  This got my attention!

(Full disclosure here:  although I used to work for AT&T, I am no longer employed with them.  I am not endorsing this product, nor am I being paid to discuss it on this blog.  I have no current affiliation with Radio Shack, Acer, or AT&T.  I do not own this brand of Netbook, nor do I currently have any phone or data services with AT&T.)

Acer® Aspire® One AT&T® 3G 8.9" Netbook (Sapphire Blue) - RadioShack.com
Acer® Aspire® One AT&T® 3G 8.9″ Netbook at Radio Shack

Until stumbling across this product listing, I had no idea that it was available.  It takes the Netbook, which has been out for a little while now, and expands its networking capability by having the 3G Internet card built into the computer!  This means a user would not be committed to only being on-line in a wi-fi area, dramatically increasing the areas where it could be used.  On a park bench, with a mocha, perhaps?

This kind of technology package would have been really nice to have when I was an over-the-road truck driver.  Being able to have such a small machine with networking capability would have been a real plus.
In another twist, the machines, similar to what is pictured here, can not only be purchased for about $350, but if you want to buy your Internet service through AT&T, you can pick it up for only about $50.  They are selling the Netbooks with a service plan, making it a buying experience quite like purchasing a cell phone.  With a two-year agreement for a qualifying data-plan, you can pick up a Netbook computer for a mere $50.  I am guessing that besides truck drivers; college students, and travelling business people may find the offer of interest.  While the appeal for the road warrior exists, it may also appeal to the home user that just wants a basic machine, and does not want to bother with setting up a home network.
Time will tell if this is a money maker for AT&T.  It is further proof, though, that laptops and cell phones are being blended together in ways we would not have expected just a few short years ago.

BlogSunnyside’s “Believe It Or Not!” Department

As a child I can remember watching “Ripley’s Believe It or Not!” on TV.  I was always entertained by the weird and wonderful topics covered.  I also was fortunate enough to find some Ripley’s books in my school library.  They were always fun.

Ripley's Museum in Orlando, Florida

Later in life, I had a chance to visit the Ripley’s museum and also the aquarium in Gatlinburg, Tennessee.  Also, on one of my many trips to Orlando, Florida, I got to see the Ripley’s museum there as well.  I don’t remember touring the one in Orlando, but just seeing the exterior of the building is something I won’t forget!  It looks like it is tilted sideways!

This past week has seen some extraordinary events take place in the lives of a couple of my family members.  In an homage to Ripley’s, BlogSunnyside is creating a “Believe It or Not!” Department.  My mind still can’t grasp how such events can occur so close together, but it has been quite a shocker for everyone concerned.

Car Crashes Into My Sister's House

Car Crashes Into My Sister's House - Photo by Robin Medeiros

First, my sister, who resides in Signal Mountain, Tennessee, was astonished when one of her neighbor’s cars came crashing into her house!  Her neighbor had apparently parked the car on the street, and gotten out.  She neglected to put the car into park, however.  Since she parked on a hill, the car started rolling.  It left the roadway, went through my sister’s yard, took out one of her prized young dogwood trees, did other landscaping damage, and finally came to rest against my sister’s front steps.

This lovely incident occurred this past Monday.  It reminds me of something a plumber friend once told me: “Remember, crap always goes downhill!”  Unfortunately for my sister, she lives downhill from her neighbor.  On the upside, no one was hurt.  We can all be thankful for that.  Now I know what your thinking: What is so shocking about this?  I have heard of vehicles crashing into houses and other buildings before.  That is not so strange.  Why would you create a “Believe It or Not!” Department on your blog for something like this?  Sure it is rare, but it is not unheard of…That’s where the next part of the story comes into play.

Yes, I have heard of cars hitting buildings before.  It has always been something I have read about or seen on TV.  This is the first time I have had it happen to someone close to me.  The really incredible part of this story is that it happened to another family member on Friday of the same week!

Car Crashes Into My Grandmother's Home - Photo From the Chattanoogan.com

In the wee hours of Friday morning, my grandmother’s home in Red Bank, Tennessee was hit by a car!  The circumstances were different in this case.  In the midnight hour, a woman drove her car into my grandmother’s home.  Fortunately, my elderly grandmother was asleep in another room and was not hurt.  The driver was arrested, and police believe alcohol was involved.  Unlike what happened to my sister, this time the car did extensive damage to the building.  It may take several weeks for the damage to be repaired to the building.

Because these two incidents occurred within the same week, and because I have never had this happen to anyone I personally know; I am including this in my newly created “Believe It Or Not!” Department.  It is my sincere hope that no other family members experience anything like this.

Since drinking and driving is illegal, I am also including this latter incident in the category of Dumb Crook News.  So there you have it, a car crashed into my both my sister’s house, and my grandmother’s home in the same week.  “Believe It Or Not!”

Dumb Crook News: Colfax, Washington

Environmentalist Wacko Crooks Vandalize Car Dealership

This past week some dumb crooks vandalized a car dealership in Colfax, Washington.  After throwing eggs, the dumb crooks left a note decrying “the ignorant use of fossil fuels”.  One problem for the crooks: they wrote their note on the back of the grocery receipt for the eggs.

Investigators with the Whitman County Sheriff’s office went to the grocery, watched video tape from the store’s cameras, and quickly identified the vandals.  Four individuals have admitted to taking part in the incident, and have agreed to pay for cleanup costs.  They will also write letters of apology to the car dealership.

In addition, they may face criminal charges.

Special thanks to the BlogSunnyside reader that alerted me to this story!

Daily Sun News Acknowledges Growing Importance Of Blogs

In a recent column, a staff member of the Daily Sun News acknowledged the growing importance of blogs, and on-line news sources, while decrying the fact that newspapers as an industry are struggling.  In addition to the column, an editorial cartoon lampooned the presence of blogs.  This is not the first time that the Daily Sun News has run cartoons trying to belittle blogs.  How about some objectivity and transparency from the old guard media?

As for me and this blog, I have never represented myself as a reporter.  I have never said I am objective or unbiased.  That is the lie told by the main stream media.  Here you will get my analysis and commentary.  This is not a “news” site.  It is a blog that talks about news.

For some reason the staffer at the DSN thinks that all bloggers want to be recognized as news agencies.  I am all about protecting individual freedom, and don’t fall into that kind of pack mentality.  Most bloggers write about issues that they find personally interesting.  It is a hobby that generates little to no income for 95% of those engaged in it.  Anyone can start a blog for free, so there is no limit to the number of people who could potentially be blogging.

It is interesting that newspapers and certain political groups in Washington are actually trying to make bloggers get a license from the state, and regulate what they say and do.  In reality, they are trying to stifle alternative sources of news.

There is one area where I can agree with what the columnist said.  He was crying about pictures being used in other presentations without the original source being sited.  I have a link to the Daily Sun News on this blog, and also a paid subscription to the print edition.  If I have posted a picture from the DSN website here without explicitly saying where I got it, that is an oversight on my part.

Going back to being objective and transparent, it would be refreshing if the DSN and other papers disclosed how much taxpayer money they receive, especially when reporting on government issues.  In Sunnyside, the DSN is the “official” newspaper of city government.  This garners hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars of taxpayer money for the newspaper each year.  The legal information printed could easily be posted on the city’s website saving considerable expense for the citizenry each year.

Not to be done feeding at the government trough, Washington newspapers have wrangled a huge tax break from the state government this year to help bail them out.  Despite the state having to layoff thousands of school teachers, the newspapers asked for, and got, a 40% reduction in state taxes.

See the Seattle Times article: Gov. Gregoire approves tax cut for Washington state newspapers

But wait, there’s more!  Newspapers are also trying to get Federal bailout money as well.  Why not?  It’s what all the politically connected businesses are doing these days.  Taking taxpayer money instead of making profits!  How’s that for a “free” press?

Don’t get me wrong, I still like my newspaper.  I just think they should read the book “Who moved my cheese?”.  It might help them adapt to a changing world.

Space Shuttle Atlantis Completes Hubble Repairs

The most recent mission of the Space Shuttle Atlantis appears to have been successful in fixing up the Hubble Space Telescope.  Five space walks were taken by astronauts to complete all the necessary repairs and upgrades.  NASA expects it to hold up another 5-10 years, and be able to provide pictures as good as, or better than what have previously been taken.

At one point during the mission, an astronomer took a picture of the Shuttle as it made a transit across the sun.  This is the first time anyone has taken a picture of the Shuttle in this manner.

This morning astronauts began preparations for a scheduled Friday morning landing to take place at 7AM Pacific Time at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.  A second opportunity is scheduled for 8:39 AM.

The Shuttle Landing Facility in Florida has a runway 15,000 feet long, and 300 feet wide.  This makes it just slightly larger than the runway at the Sunnyside Municipal Airport. ;)

Wouldn’t it be something if spacecraft capable of taking off and landing from conventional runways could take tourists to space?  Don’t scoff too much.  There are already companies working on developing ways to start privately operated flights to space.  Who knows what the future will bring?

GITMO Should Be Closed

I just finished watching President Obama and Former Vice President Cheney giving speeches about the War on Terror, and Guantanamo Bay.  For speaking points, I would have to give Cheney the edge for a better delivery.  For substance, Obama wins.  At least on this issue of the day.

It was interesting that Cheney was upset that only certain information has been declassified.  He feels that if more information was known, the public would view his position in a more positive light.  What he failed to mention, is that under the Bush Administration, with a compliant Republican Congress, the law was changed to allow the President sole authority when it comes to declassifying documents.  Previously, after a period of 25 years, information would be declassified.  Now the President can selectively declassify anything he wants, without any oversight from any members of Congress.  That’s the way the Republicans wanted it done, just a few short years ago.  Now, out of power, Cheney seems upset by that.

I am opposed to granting the President or the Congress anymore power than they already have.  Ultimate power rests with the people, not the government.  Both Cheney and Obama seem to be missing that point.  Instead, both are using partisan tactics to govern.

As far as Gitmo is concerned, Obama is right to seek its closure.  The entire purpose for sending detainees there was to circumvent our laws and treaty obligations regarding prisoners (or as Cheney likes to call them, detainees, enemy combants, terrorists, anything but what they actually are: prisoners).  The Supreme Court heard about a half dozen cases during the Bush Administration on this issue, and the Bush Administration lost every case.  Even the two justices appointed by Bush sided against him on this issue.  The bottom line is that despite holding prisoners at Gitmo, they must be treated like any other prisoners under the law.

Cheney still says that everything the previous administration did was legal.  The courts have not held that view.  Obama is right to change the policies to bring them into compliance with our laws, and our country’s values.  Extremists in the President’s party are not satisified with these changes, however.  Some seek to prosecute people for actions taken in regards to these prior policies.  As one aquaintance of mine stated on his blog, it is a “witch hunt”.  For the sake of the country, the witch hunt should stop.  We should change the policies as Obama is trying to do, and move on.

We have military prisons in this country capable of housing the prisoners now at Guantanamo Bay.  Leavenworth is one such example.  They even have courtrooms there for trials, tribunals, or whatever else may be used to hear the cases of these prisoners.  There are other facilities that could be used as well.  We could even build a new one, if necessary.

Abuses of prisoners at places like Guantanamo and Abu Gharaib have caused the ranks of terrorist organizations to swell.  Torture of prisoners is not only counter to American values, but it costs lives of military men and women put into harms way in places like Iraq and Afghanistan.  This is because it hardens the resistance of those who oppose us.

I am not a big fan of President Obama, but on this issue, he is taking the right stand.  In our quest for justice, we can not allow bloodlust to cloud our judgement.  History will judge us on how closely we abide by our stated values.  America can be strong on defense, aggressive in our actions, and still be as Abraham Lincoln, and later Ronald Reagan, said: “the last best hope” on Earth.

Sunnyside: The Book

There is a new book out called “Sunnyside” by Glen David Gold.  It is not about Sunnyside, Washington.  Nor does it discuss farming, migrant labor, or gangs.  It is a historical novel centered around Charlie Chaplin, and set during the World War I period.  Based on Amazon’s description, that is about as much as I want to know.  For everyone else who may be interested in it, you can go to Amazon or your favorite bookstore and check it out.
