Gunman Killed As Police Dispense A Pound Of Cure

  • Area around Centennial Park scene of shooting this past Saturday night

  • The gazebo at Centennial Park will be the gathering place in Sunnyside for the National Day of Prayer observance on Thursday at noon

Centennial Park in downtown Sunnyside

According to a copy of a press release obtained by this blog, Sunnyside Police Department officers stopped a vehicle at 6th and Edison Saturday night after it had been involved in incidents of gunfire.  Officers were taking the occupants of the vehicle into custody when one of them took out a handgun and fired at the officers.  The officers returned fire, shooting and killing the gunman.

Fortunately, none of the officers were hurt.  At the request of Sunnyside Police, the Washington State Patrol is investigating the incident.  Two Sunnyside Police officers are on administrative leave pending the results of the investigation.  This is a routine procedure when police use deadly force.

At this time, neither the gunman, nor the officers have been identified by the police.  The press release states that following an autopsy of the gunman, their identity will be released.  The officers involved will be named after the investigation is complete.

It is ironic that Centennial Park has been selected by the Sunnyside Ministerial Association as the place of observance for this year’s National Day of Prayer.  The local observance will take place this Thursday at noon, in the gazebo at the park.  It seems fitting to bring spiritual warfare to fight the worldly violence taking place in our downtown core.

The City Council will be receiving a previously scheduled presentation on Gang Suppression from Sunnyside Police at tomorrow night’s workshop meeting.  The Sunnyside Police have been waiting since February to make this presentation to the Council.  Council Members on the Public Safety Committee have already been briefed on it by Deputy Chief Phil Schenck, but the entire Council has not been briefed.

This latest shooting follows an earlier one that took place in Outlook this week.  In the Outlook shooting, just outside of Sunnyside city limits, a teenager who was already receiving services from Sunnyside’s Promise, was gunned down when she answered a knock on her door.  The Outlook shooting is believed to be gang related.

What is sad about this is it did not have to come to this. We have had Mayor Restucci, Pablo Garcia, Theresa Hancock, and Tom Gehlen on the council for years and just let things fester without doing a thing. Councilman Hancock never did trust the police department per their budget and voted against anything that could had helped! Gehlen and Garcia would do whatever hancock directed them to do such as if they were here little puppets. Then Restucci has been on the council with these people and they have had over 16 lawsuits filed against the city in their tenure on the council. And the city taxpayers are the ones who will end up paying for these people’s failures per high insurance rates. And possibly by having a son or daughter killed in gang violence due to their inability to carry out their duties as councilmen!

It is sad to set and watch Hancock constantly battle the police department per monies needed to combat gangs. And we almost lost an officer or two due this shoot out that possibly could have been prevented had Hancock showed any caring towards the taxpayers of this community! I find it very sad that hancock went to the legislature to get a law in to help her own grandkid per peanuts allergies. And yet had little concern per the kids in this community by nor backing our police department when they needed. All I can say is I do feel sorry for councilman Hancock. She has no heart when it comes to others kids; but she sure uses her authority for her own grandchild. A little twisted in my view !

Our Sunnyside Police are continuing to demonstrate their superb care for our streets and our safety. According to a civilian at the scene, apparently a large caliber pistol was used to fire at the officers through the car – causing a gaping hole in the sheet metal of the car. Fortunately none of the officers were hit.
There prompt action may have saved another citizen from being murdered as was the case in Outlook and the 16 year-old- girl during the same week.
UNFORTUATELY the articles in the Sunnyside Daily News and the Yakima Herald are additional source of more fodder ENABLING such violent gang activity than they are being a source of supporting the very Police Officers who are protecting our safety and freedom.
    THANK YOU SSPD!
