Bonnie Dunbar Statue Unveiled In Sunnyside

Bonnie Dunbar took time for members of the public to have their picture taken following unveiling of the newest statue in Sunnyside. In this picture, my daughter is seated in front of Bonnie Dunbar.

This morning, a ceremony was held to unveil the newest bronze statue placed near Central Park in Sunnyside.  Dignitaries from state and local offices attended, making brief comments.  Also, members of the Dunbar family, including Bonnie Dunbar herself participated in the event.  Bonnie Dunbar’s niece received the honor of pulling the blanket off the statue to unveil the first bronze statue in Sunnyside commemorated during the lifetime of the person it is modeled after.

A representative from the governor’s office read a proclamation, in which today is officially recognized as Bonnie Dunbar Day in the State of Washington.  Sunnyside Mayor Mike Farmer also issued a proclamation declaring it Bonnie Dunbar Day in the City of Sunnyside as well.  Sunnyside School Board Member Lorenzo Garza encouraged students to pay attention to the new statue and learn about Bonnie Dunbar while going to and from the swimming pool.

County Commissioner Rand Elliott, Councilmembers Jim Restucci, Craig Hicks, and Theresa Hancock all attended the event.  Interim City Manager Frank Sweet and Sunnyside Community Hospital CEO John Gallagher were on hand as well.  Members of the VFW Post and other veterans provided an Honor Guard.

Members of The Bronze Society, which organized the support of sponsors and patrons to pay for the statue, also were recognized during the event.  My apologies to everyone that I am failing to mention, it was a good turnout for the unveiling this morning.

Following the unveiling, Bonnie Dunbar graciously allowed members of the public to have their picture taken with her for quite some time.
