Pesos Prompt Police Participation In Payment Rejection

Mexican peso

Recently, a resident of the City of Sunnyside received a utility bill from the city, and being a responsible person, promptly paid it.  The city was kind enough to put a notice in Spanish on the bill, notifying the resident of the due date for payment.  This was encouraging to the resident, who happened to have some extra Mexican Pesos laying about, and enjoys living in a city that is sensitive to people of diverse backgrounds.  The resident made their payment at City Hall, and went about their business unaware of the pending police visit they were about to receive.

Billing From the City Includes Both English and Spanish Information

What the resident did not know, however, is that the Chief of Police would be dispatched to hunt them down for the heinous act of paying the bill in such currency.  The City Manager penned a letter to the resident, declining acceptance of the payment, and threatening to tack on additional fees if they did not render unto Caesar in U.S. dollars.  Here is a copy of the letter:

Mark Gervasi's Letter Delivered Under Armed Messenger

Attempts to reach City Manager Mark Gervasi with questions regarding payment policies for utility bills, taxes, and fees were unsuccessful this week.  It is not clear if the city has any formal policy regarding payments made by residents, or when such a policy may have gone into effect.  It is also not known if the police will be dispatched for anyone else seen flashing pesos within city limits.

Drudge Report Links To Alex Jones

Many people consider Rush Limbaugh to be “hard right”.  They obviously have never listened to Alex Jones.  While I have my disagreements with both men, I find them entertaining to listen to from time to time.  (And just to be fair, I listen to lefty talk show hosts like Ed Schultz and Alan Colmes for balance.)

In this YouTube video promoted by the Drudge Report, Jones slams the mainstream media for worshipping Lebron James and other celebrities while the United States’ economy collapses.  It’s a good point about how the media and politicians love to distract the American people from issues that really matter.

Brother Can You Spare A FRAUD?

This video sums it up quite nicely.

Who Is The Czar of the Czars?

With all the talk about “czars” in the White House, it has me wondering if we should have a Commander-In-Chief and Chief Executive Czar.  This special advisor, which would not need to be confirmed by Congress, could coordinate the various parts of the Department of Defense, as well as other areas of the Executive Branch.  He or she could report directly to the President, on an “as needed” basis when running the Executive branch.

This would make them the President on an operational basis, without being elected, or in any way answerable to the Congress.  After all, the position is not a Constitutional office.

The benefits to this would be that the President would be free to give speeches to the joint Houses of Congress, to school children, and staged “town-hall” events even more frequently.  In fact, we could just think of the President as being the press secretary to the Presidential Czar.

In this way, the best campaigner, speaker, and press relations folks could publicly be “President”, while the best and brightest individuals are appointed “Czar”.  The people would not know who the Czar is, necessarily.  He could run things as a puppet master for all we would know.

The Czar would not be required to answer questions on the application for other White House employees.  This would make information about them hard or impossible to get.  No formal job description would be written either, since they will be running things in their own way, without constitutional checks and balances.

In fact, why limit the Czar to just the Executive Branch?  They could also run monetary policy (like the private Federal Reserve), appropriate money to whatever purpose they deem fit, take us to war, or do anything else that needs done by the government.

When one considers that we now have 30-35 czars in the White House, with cabinet heads reporting to them, it is no wonder that the President  did not hold a cabinet meeting in the first 90 days he was in office.  I am wondering if we have a Czar over the czars….a Czar Czar!

Maybe President Obama himself, is already reporting to a Czar Czar?

On the other hand, we could follow the Constitution.  When George Washington took office, there was no precedent for how to appoint Presidential advisors.  He filled his cabinet with the advice and consent of Congress.

More recently, Presidents have appointed cabinet level officials for FEMA, the EPA, Education, Energy, and other subjects of concern.  These have been appointed with the advice and consent of Congress.

Presidents of both parties have had special advisors in the past (czars) for various reasons.  With cabinet level officials reporting to “czars”, it is time to end this practice.  The czars should either be appointed to the cabinet, or otherwise made subject to Congressional confirmation.

Our founding fathers were wise to put checks and balances in the Constitution.  We should all beware of any increase in the concentration of power under one person or office.

HR 1207 “Audit the Fed” Bill Now Co-Sponsored By Majority of House Members

Ron Paul’s HR 1207, the “Audit the Fed” bill is now being co-sponsored by the majority of members of the U.S. House of Representatives.  It is gathering bi-partisan support as Americans demand transparency in government.  Our local Congressman, Doc Hastings, is also a co-sponsor of the bill.

Here is a copy of the press release from Congressman Paul’s office:

For Immediate Release
June 11, 2009 Audit the Fed Bill Reaches Crucial Benchmark Washington, D.C. – Congressman Ron Paul’s Federal Reserve Transparency Act, HR 1207, has reached and surpassed the level of 218 cosponsors in the House of Representatives, which means it is now cosponsored by a majority of the members.

The 218th cosponsor was Dennis Kucinich (OH-10), and the bill has since received its 222nd cosponsor.
“The tremendous grass-roots and bipartisan support in Congress for HR 1207 is an indicator of how mainstream America is fed up with Fed secrecy,” said Congressman Paul. “I look forward to this issue receiving greater public exposure.”
Hearings on Federal Reserve transparency are expected within the next month, as part of the Financial Services Committee’s series of hearings on regulatory reform.

Glenn Beck: The Inconvenient Debt

Economic Rescue Cost $7.2 TRILLION and Counting

$7.2 trillion is the current price tag of the economic bailouts so far.  This according to a CNNMoney.com article which can be found, here.  This figure includes $1.6 trillion spent under the Term Auction Facility, started in December 2007.  No that is not a typo.  The year 2007!  Contrary to what the Bush administration has been telling us, this “crisis” did not just manifest itself just prior to the election.  Given that these repeated government interventions have failed to magically make the economy grow, I suggest we try having free markets instead.

The history of government making money for us is not a great one.  Why do we put our faith in political leaders in DC to “secure” our economic future?  Given that we are now spending trillions of dollars, the concept of spending just $1 billion seems quaint.  Still, this video entitled “What’s in a Billion?” is instructive.

FoxNews, Bloomberg, Others, Seek Court Action On Federal Reserve

FoxNews has joined a coalition of news media organizations filing a lawsuit against the Federal Reserve.  They are filing a freedom of information request to find out where bailout money is going.  This bailout money is not part of the famous $700 billion package debated in Congress recently.  The Federal Reserve has undertaken a $2 TRILLION bailout of its member banks without ANY Congressional approval.  In addition, they refuse to name the recipients of this money, or what they are doing with it.  It seems that if the world knew what was happening, the member banks’ reputations might suffer.

A good summary of what is happening can be found here.
