Pershing: Commander of the Great War by John Perry

“No other American military leader is so important and yet so little known as John J. Pershing.”

Those interested in leadership and military history will find this book about “Black Jack” Pershing to be a quick and informative read. At one time, over a million men followed this man into battle, but yet he is not a major figure in contemporary discussions of history. However, he was highly regarded in his own time, and was discussed as a potential candidate for President following the “Great War.”

This book on John J. Pershing (1860-1948) is part of a series called “The Generals.”

Pershing was born in 1860, and his Missouri hometown of Laclede was subject to a Confederate raid in 1864. At times his family struggled financially, because of war damage, and subsequent economic conditions.

Later, Pershing taught black students in grade school, and eventually sought an appointment to West Point because it provided a free college education. His early Army career saw him commanding a black cavalry unit of “Buffalo Soldiers” fame. Critics of Pershing tagged him with a derogatory nickname from this experience, which newspaper editors later softened into “Black Jack.”

The book is a short, easy to read, overview of the life of John J. Pershing. In fact, most of the book centers on his family, and early career prior to World War I. Because of this, most readers will be intrigued by information that is not generally taught in U.S. History classes in our schools.

Pershing was renowned for his attention to detail, tough enforcement of regulations, and organizational leadership skills. Presidents McKinley, Teddy Roosevelt, Wilson, Franklin Roosevelt, and Harry Truman all had complimentary things to say about him.

Future Army officers of note such as Douglas MacArthur, George Marshall, and George Patton all credited Pershing with being a significant influence on their leadership development.

His leadership legacy includes creation of the Military Police, Pershing Rifles, and significant influence over teaching Army leaders through a formal education system within the military. Lessons learned during the European conflict are still taught to junior military officers today.

For a short introductory biography of a man somewhat neglected in teaching of history, I highly recommend this book. For serious students of history, this book will serve as a good primer for detailed study of Pershing.

BE THE PEOPLE, by Carol M. Swain PhD; A Book Review

Be the People, A Call to Reclaim America’s Faith & Promise, is a call to action for those that many would categorize as “the religious right.” What makes this book so interesting, is that the author is not what one would expect. Dr. Swain is an African-American woman raised in the rural South in a shack with no indoor plumbing. She dropped out of high school, has been divorced, raised kids as a single mother, and admits to having an abortion.

Against all odds, Swain earned her GED, and eventually achieved a successful career in academia. She is now a professor of political science and of law at Vanderbilt University. Her “rags to riches” background is a forceful reminder that the ideals of the “American Dream” are alive and well; and can be achieved regardless of socioeconomic backgrounds.

The book is broken into two parts; the first is titled “Broken Vows: Forsaking What We Once Knew.” It focuses on the changing values that Americans have, and how they have departed from those of our founding fathers. She is critical of political correctness, and its censoring of traditional Christian expression of thought in the public sphere. Swain documents how Christian values were integral in the creation of historical documents such as the Declaration of Independence, and the Constitution.

Her pro-life stance is strong, and she documents her own personal battle with guilt and health complications following her own abortion. Swain courageously criticizes faulty arguments on the “necessity” of abortion, knowing that she risks losing her academic career by “coming out” publicly as a Christian. She compares many of the academic studies on abortion to the documented “junk science” of climate scientists that have altered data to document climate change, now referred to as “climategate.”

Part Two of the book is entitled “Banished Virtues: Reclaiming Truth and Justice in Policy Choices.” In the second part of the book, Swain amplifies her call for readers to become politically active. At the end of each chapter she includes “Action Points”, which have suggested readings, and topics for small group discussions. She also prints the link to her website for more discussion items.

Swain presents a strong spiritual message of taking action in society. Although heavily centered on political issues and activism, she also encourages readers to be openly Christian in the business world. She laments that major media is heavily slanted toward secular humanist culture, and that merely winning at the ballot box will not counter what she considers the deterioration of our culture.

The last 90 pages of the book are filled with what I consider “clutter.” She includes the text of the Ten Commandments, The Declaration of Independence, The Bill of Rights, and the Constitution of the United States of America (1787) as appendices. This is followed by traditional style notes documenting sources and an index.

As important as the founding documents are, I do not feel it necessary to have them printed in this book. She could have simply stopped with encouraging her readers to read them. All are readily available on the Internet and at libraries everywhere.

Despite this, I found her book thought provoking. Her unique perspectives on poverty, race, and women’s issues are something that conservatives and liberals alike can benefit from. I recommend this book, and give it four stars on a five star scale.

But You’re Daddy, You Can Do Anything!

Kids are such a wonderful blessing, as any parent or grandparent can attest to.  I am fortunate that I am blessed with three wonderful children, who delight me to no end.

They recently asked me to do something for them.  I told them that I wish I could, but that it is simply not possible.

The four-year-old then said, “But you’re Daddy, you can do anything!”  Despite the vote of confidence from my little one, I regret to inform the readers of this blog that I am merely a mortal man.

Many children, especially young ones, believe in the unlimited ability of parents to provide things with mysterious or magical means of production.  I had to smile when my child said this to me, even as I burst her bubble of expectations.

It is part of growing up that we learn to do things for ourselves, while also learning what our own personal limitations are.  Someone once said, “You don’t know who you really are, until you have tried your hardest at something, and still failed.”

There is a grain of truth in that statement, as experiences help to shape our character.  I know what my limitations are, and have opinions about what the limitations of government should be.

It is not a mature life view to expect someone to provide food, clothing, shelter, medical care, and spending money to us for our entire lives.  It is part of the process of growing up.  As the bickering over deficit spending continues in Washington D.C., I am reminded of how America has some growing up of its own to do.

It is not healthy to have people look to Uncle Sam or the politicians in Olympia, and say, “but you’re Daddy, you can do anything!”

Principles of Freedom

This weekend, I am reading “The 5000 Year Leap, A Miracle That Changed the World”, by Cleon Skousen.  As our nation celebrates declaring independence from Britain (something that 25% of us don’t know, according to a poll mentioned on the NBC newscast Sunday night), it is now more important than ever to become familiar with what the Founders envisioned for the structure and function of our government.

The book is full of wonderful quotations from our founders, and is devoted to 28 Principles of Freedom our Founders believed in.

“Government is not reason, it is not eloquence – it is force! Like fire, it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master.” –  George Washington

The book has chapters dedicated to each of the 28 principles, which I shall list here:

1.  The Only Reliable Basis for Sound Government and Just Human Relations is Natural Law.

2.  A Free People Cannot Survive Under a Republican Constitution Unless They Remain Virtuous and Morally Strong.

3.  The Most Promising Method of Securing a Virtuous and Morally Stable People is to Elect Virtuous Leaders.

4.  Without Religion the Government of a Free People Cannot be Maintained.

5.  All Things Were Created by God, Therefore upon Him All Mankind are Equally Dependent, and to Him They are Equally Responsible.

6.  All Men are Created Equal.

7.  The Proper Role of Government is to Protect Equal Rights, Not Provide Equal Things.

8.  Men are Endowed by Their Creator with Certain Unalienable Rights.

9.  To Protect Man’s Rights, God has Revealed Certain Principles of Divine Law.

10.  The God-given Right to Govern is Vested in the Sovereign Authority of the Whole People.

11.  The Majority of the People may Alter or Abolish a Government Which has Become Tyrannical.

12.  The United States of America Shall be a Republic.

13.  A Constitution Should be Structured to Permanently Protect the People from the Human Frailties of their Rulers.

14.  Life and Liberty are Secure Only so Long as the Right to Property is Secure.

15.  The Highest Level of Prosperity Occurs when there is a Free-market Economy and a Minimum of Government Regulations.

16.  The Government Should be Separated into Three Branches – Legislative, Executive, and Judicial.

17.  A System of Checks and Balances Should be Adopted to Prevent the Abuse of Power.

18.  The Unalienable Rights of the People are Most Likely to be Preserved if the Principles of Government are Set Forth in a Written Constitution.

19.  Only Limited and Carefully Defined Powers Should be Delegated to Government, All Others Being Retained in the People.

20.  Efficiency and Dispatch Require Government to Operate According to the Will of the Majority, but Constitutional Provisions Must be Made To Protect the Rights of the Minority.

21.  Strong Local Self-government is the Keystone to Preserving Human Freedom.

22.  A Free People Should be Governed by Law and Not by the Whims of Men.

23.  A Free Society Cannot Survive as a Republic Without a Broad Program of General Education.

24.  A Free People Will Not Survive Unless They Stay Strong.

25.  Peace, Commerce, and Honest Friendship with All Nations – Entangling Alliances with None.

26.  The Core Unit Which Determines the Strength of Any Society is the Family; Therefore, the Government Should Foster and Protect Its Integrity.

27.  The Burden of Debt is as Destructive to Freedom as Subjugation by Conquest.

28.  The United States Has a Manifest Destiny to be an Example and a Blessing to the Entire Human Race.

“I always consider the settlement of America with reverence and wonder, as the opening of a grand scene and design in Providence for the illumination of the ignorant, and the emancipation of the slavish part of mankind all over the earth.” – John Adams

Our nation has a wonderful story.  We should seek to learn about it, talk about it, and teach it to our children.  It is truly a miracle that the Founders, coming from so many different backgrounds, could unite and support the Principles of Freedom embodied in documents such as the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.

God Bless America!

Speakers At Republican Club Address Bird Bombs and Gangs

Grandview Police Chief David Charvet speaking to Sunnyside Republican Club

The Sunnyside Republican Club heard Grandview Police Chief David Charvet and Sunnyside Council Member Don Vlieger address political and law enforcement issues ranging from controlling birds in area orchards, to controlling nuisance behaviors of gangs.

Chief Charvet spoke to the issue of “Bird Bombs” which has been the subject of some recent media coverage.  Local orchards use these and other devices to scare away birds from their fruit trees.  ”Bird Bangers” is another name for them.  Charvet said that propane powered noise makers are another method commonly used.

The bird bombs have been in the news because agents of the federal government have started enforcing regulations that require background checks and other controls related to their usage.  Charvet said as a law enforcement officer, he has never responded to a situation where these devices are used in a crime, and personally did not see the need for these new regulations.

He pointed out that other similar explosives are available, without these regulatory controls, in the form of flare guns, shotgun blanks, and even regular shotgun ammunition loads.  Charvet also pointed out that background checks are not required to purchase rifle or pistol ammunition either.

A "Bird Bomb" explosive noise maker subject to new federal enforcement and regulations.

I asked if explosives by model rocket hobbyists were subject to these type of restrictions, and again Charvet said they were not.  Some other comments in the room expressed concern about the government spending its resources enforcing these types of regulations, while public safety is being jeopardized by dangerous criminal gangs in our area.

While speaking, Chief Charvet passed around “Bird Bomb” explosive charges for the audience to see and handle.  Charvet said he had absolutely no concerns about anyone being harmed by handling the small explosives, which are little larger than a firecracker.

Following Chief Charvet’s presentation, Sunnyside Council Member Don Vlieger addressed the topic of gangs in our community.

Don Vlieger said that he did not distinguish between “wannabe” gang members and “actual” gang members.  He compared it to someone who steals a TV from a person’s home.  ”Are they a burglar or not?”, he asked.

Vlieger said that if they are committing acts of a gang member, then are a gang member.  However, Vlieger did say that there are different levels of gang involvement.

Drawing from his background in gang prevention while a deputy for the Los Angeles County Sheriff, and his experience working with school districts as a gang prevention officer and nationally travelled seminar speaker on this topic, Vlieger spoke of the hundreds of troubled kids he has counseled.

His counseling experience covers both Washington and California.

“Poverty does not cause gangs.  Most people in poverty are not in gangs” said Vlieger.

He continued, “A nest does not produce eggs, although it might provide an environment where they can be nurtered.”

Vlieger said that some kids think it is “fun” to be in a gang, adding that mainstream middle class values can not be used to relate to this alternative culture.

“Going to jail for some of these kids means that they have better food, better healthcare, and that they will be surrounded by friends they already know.  Most of us in this room would not have friends there, and would not be a good time for us,” said Vlieger.

Speaking of the Sunnyside Police Department’s proposed Gang Elimination Plan, Vlieger said “The police have a plan to deny sanctuary and support to gangs.”  He said that to be successful, the city must create pressure while also providing opportunity.  With police providing suppression efforts and increasing the pressure on gang members, they will have more incentive to seek help from Sunnyside’s Promise, he said.

Council Member Don Vlieger addresses the Sunnyside Republican Club while Council Member Theresa Hancock sits nearby.

A question was asked about why the Sunnyside Council was not strongly supporting the plan proposed by police.  Sunnyside Council Member Theresa Hancock, who was also in the audience, spoke up and said she is opposed to the idea of notifying employers if they had gang members on their payroll.

“While they are at work, they are not committing crimes”, said Hancock.

Vlieger countered, “If an employer has a child molester or an Al Qaeda member at their business, they have a right to know that.  The same is true for gang members.  We would be negligent if we did not tell them.”

“Atlas Shrugged” Update For Sunnyside

I made a personal inquiry with our local movie theater operator to ask them to show the movie “Atlas Shrugged”.  Today I received their reply, which in part says:

Thank you for your interest to have the movie “Atlas Shrugged”… At this time, this film is a limited release, which means there are very few prints and they go to the larger markets such as New York, LA, and Seattle first. We do not know if or when we may be able to get a print; however, should we find out that it will be booked for us, we will make sure to include it on the “Coming Attractions” page on our website…

I do appreciate the staff of the company sharing their response, while also being disappointed.  Based on my knowledge of this industry, it is unlikely this theater will be showing the movie.  However, at the end of this post, you can watch a YouTube clip from the movie where the heroine Dagny Taggart confronts a union boss.  There, I feel better now.

Atlas Shrugged Movie Opens Today

The new “Atlas Shrugged Part 1″ movie opens today.  It is surely a beautiful movie, but we won’t see it open in Sunnyside.  At least we can watch the trailer online:

Epsilon, 1-800-FLOWERS.COM EMAIL BREACH

Recently, a company called Epsilon, which sends billions of emails a year for its clients, had a breach of security which has allowed hackers access to names and email addresses of customers.  Epsilon has not disclosed the entire list of companies that are affected, however I did get an email from 1-800-FLOWERS.com advising me that my email is among those affected.  They also “regret” any inconvenience this may cause.  Yes, I am sure they do.

Epsilon, in a public statement, which can be read here, says that only 2% of its total clients are affected.  Well ain’t that nice.

While Epsilon is not saying which companies are affected, news media and blogs are starting to compile lists.  This list comes from COMPUTERWORLD, which states that about 50 companies are known to be affected so far.  Here are some…

AbeBooks

Ameriprise Financial

Barclays Bank

Best Buy

Brookstone

Citibank

Disney Destinations

Hilton Worldwide

JP Morgan Chase

Kroger

Lacoste

Marriott International

McKinsey Quarterly

New York & Company

Robert Half

Target

Tivo

US Bank

Walgreens

We can add 1-800 FLOWERS to the list.  Here is the text of the email they sent me:
