Video Included: Doc Hastings Speaks To Yakima County Republicans

A link to complete video of Hastings’ speech is included at the end of this post.

This past Friday night, Congressman Doc Hastings gave a speech that “revved up” the crowd, as a local newspaper headline put it. The speech was given to the Yakima County Republicans at their annual Lincoln Day Dinner. This year, the event was held at the Clarion Hotel in Yakima.

Hastings said that the Lincoln Day Dinner in the year following an election is the kickoff for the next year’s election. He joked that every year he always says that the upcoming election is the most important one we have ever had for this country. However, he said it really is the most important this time.

“If you wanted to pay off a trillion-dollar debt, and you wanted to pay it off at a rate of $1 million per day, it would take you over 3,000 years to pay it off. Our national debt is now over $14 trillion,” said Hastings.

In the two years since Obama took office, Hastings noted, there has been a 25% increase in the debt as expressed as a portion of our GDP.  He said that entitlement spending is now 60% of our budget, and that we are kidding the young generations if we don’t do something about this level of spending.

“Programs such as Medicare and Medicaid have already tried some things that Congressman Paul Ryan proposes in his budget plan, and they have worked,” said Hastings. Welfare reform put more decision-making into the hands of the states, and has worked well in the past 15 years. He further said that the same thing can be done with Medicare and Medicaid through block grants to the states.

Hastings pointed out that Medicare Part D (the prescription drug benefit) has come in 40% under its projected budget. The reason for this, he said, is that the private industry has been brought in to provide services for this.

“When you allow the American people to make decisions that are best for them in their personal lives, you get the best results for the country,” said Hastings.

Congressman Hastings is the Chair of the National Resources Committee, and he noted that Obama’s actions are 180 degrees opposite of what he says. In 2008, gas prices went over $4 per gallon. At that time, there were Congressional and Presidential prohibitions on drilling for oil off California and Atlantic coasts.

When Obama took office, he closed off drilling areas on both coasts, with the exception of an area off of Virginia, and also closed off more areas in Alaska.

Hastings said that energy is vitally important to our economy, and that we have national security aspect the demands that we develop energy in our own country.

Our founding fathers put checks and balances into our government, and elections are part of that process, he said. In the last election, we had 80 new people join my caucus in Washington D.C. These new folks are making a huge difference in changing the debate in our country, he said. Hastings said that we control one-half of one-third of the government, so there is a lot of work left to do.

In closing, Congressman Hastings said:

“I am not prepared to say I am going to be a candidate in 2012, but I will say this, I can’t see myself not being a candidate in 2012!”

Obama To Address Nation: 9 Days After Bombing Begins

When I was still in grade school during the 1980′s, a memorable event in U.S. History occurred. President Ronald Reagan, ordered a military strike against targets inside of Libya. This bombing followed attacks and provocations by the Libyans against Americans.

U.S. Forces were targeted in Lebanon in a terrorist attack on a civilian discotheque. In addition, Libyan fighter jets were challenging our own fighters in a laughable claim that Libyan territorial waters extended some 200 miles into the Mediterranean Sea.  One major network news program, in a rush to air recorded radio transmissions from fighter pilots, inadvertently aired an “F-Bomb” when it played unedited video and audio coming into its newsroom from U.S. Navy aviators.

BLOGSUNNYSIDE VOTERS’ GUIDE: FEDERAL CANDIDATES

Many of you are probably wondering where I stand on candidates and initiatives on this year’s ballot.  I have decided to break this down into multiple posts.   Today you will read how I come down on Federal candidates, with information on local candidates and initiatives coming later in the week.  Without further ado, here are the candidates, and my picks:

U.S. Senator

  • Patty Murray (Prefers Democratic Party)
  • √ Dino Rossi (Prefers Republican Party)

Patty Murray has been in office for 18 years already.  It is time for a change.  Murray has never held a job in the private sector, and despite talk of helping to create private sector jobs, has no experience doing so.  She voted for bailouts of banks, car makers, and insurance companies.  She supports all of Obama’s agenda, voting in favor of the budget busting stimulus (funded with communist Chinese money), and also the federal takeover of healthcare.  In fact, China has expressed concern over the rate at which the U.S. government is spending money.  It’s getting bad when a communist government criticizes you for your government being too big!

In contrast, Dino Rossi has a record of working across party lines to balance what was then the largest budget deficit in Washington State history.  He did this without raising taxes.  Rossi has a degree in business management, and is a successful entrepreneur.  Not only does he know what it is like to work in the private sector, but he has actually created jobs.  With his experience, he knows that for small businesses to succeed, they need modest, predictable, taxation and regulation from government.  Rossi pledges to reduce federal spending, and support a balanced budget amendment.  He favors repealing government healthcare, and restoring healthcare to an issue that is between a doctor and patient.  Rossi is the best choice for U.S. Senator from Washington.

Congressional District 4

  • √ Doc Hastings (Prefers Republican Party)
  • Jay Clough (Prefers Democratic Party)

Doc Hastings is fighting to reduce the growth in spending and government programs that are aiming at eliminating our individual freedoms.  He voted against bailouts under Bush, and has continued to vote against them under Obama.  He supports keeping taxes low, and cutting government spending, as a key way to help create jobs and grow our economy.  Hastings supports increasing choices in healthcare, ending abusive lawsuits, and helping small businesses to offer healthcare.  He is the best choice to represent us in Congress.

Jay Clough is a pleasant individual from Tri-Cities.  Clough is a Marine Corps veteran.  He has never run for or held elective office.  Clough supports expanding Obama’s ineffective stimulus policies, with an emphasis on pumping government money into making windmills and other forms of “green” energy.  Clough also says that expanding broadband Internet access in rural areas should be a priority for our Congressional representative.  I am pleased that he has entered the race to challenge Doc Hastings, but his lack of business experience puts him at a disadvantage.  Voting for Clough is the same as voting to keep Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House.  With all due respect to Mr. Clough; no thank you.

Dude, Where Are Your Pants?

“Why do they call it common sense, when it is so uncommon?”

- Fred Thompson

Recently, a family was turned away from an exclusive behind the scenes tour of the White House.  The reason: a ten year old showed up wearing only a t-shirt and shorts.

Backstory:

Vernon Baker, a recently deceased resident of Idaho, was the last surviving black Medal of Honor winner from World War II.  In the heat of battle, his white company commander reportedly deserted, and Baker rallied the troops to take a German position.

He was recommended for awards to honor his valor under fire, but was denied the Medal of Honor because of racism.  In 1997, he finally was given the award, when our government finally rectified this mistake.

This past summer, Baker passed away due to brain cancer at the age of 90, and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.  At some point, his family was invited to attend a private tour of the West Wing of the White House, which also includes the Oval Office.

A White House staff member turned the family away on the day of the tour when the ten year old grandson of the before mentioned war hero showed up wearing shorts.

In this case, I do not blame the child, but do wonder why his elders did not have him dressed appropriately.  This dumbed down standard of dress is a reflection on our society as a whole, and the state of our public schools.

When I was a child, my school did not allow students to wear shorts.  We did not have uniforms, and could wear blue jeans, but shorts were forbidden.  As a student, I did not like this policy, as it was uncomfortable on hot days.  However, when I hear stories like this one, where kids show up in shorts for a tour of the Oval Office, it makes me wonder if my old school teachers may have been right to expect a higher standard of dress.

Most people would have the common sense to wear some nice clothes when going behind the scenes at the White House, but we now live in a society where the Obama Administration has apologized for turning the family away on the day of the tour.  The Administration has also faced criticism for not explicitly printing a standard of dress on the invitations sent to the family.

In redefining common sense, big government apologists are saying it is now the fault of the White House staff for not explicitly telling the family how to dress their little boy.

Octomom, Obama, and Public Assistance

Nadya Denise Doud-Suleman Guiterrez (born Natalie Denise Suleman), is popularly known as “Octomom”.  She is most widely known for giving birth to octuplets in January 2009.

She is a controversial figure, having used in vitro fertilisation (IVF) in all her pregnancies.  She had six prior children, was unemployed, and on public assistance when she gave birth to her eight youngest children.  Octomom is a high school graduate, has a four-year college degree, and even has taken some graduate level courses.

Suleman gained much attention following the highly unusual birth of eight children.  She received monetary contributions, TV deals, and has been in numerous magazine articles as well.  Now that some of the initial reaction to her unprecedented situation has worn off, she apparently is spiraling back down to the same conditions which allowed her to get pregnant with eight embryos simultaneously in the first place: dependence on government run public assistance programs.

With a record-high 40 million people on food stamps in Obama’s America, and free healthcare being promised in the future, what are the odds of more such Octomom-style debacles taking place?

Patty Murray And The Recovery Summer: Mission Accomplished?

This is a new web video released by U.S. Senate Candidate Dino Rossi.

Is This Billboard Racist?

Text of Billboard: "Come November Let's Kick Barack Obama's Ass!"

This sign is on South First Street in Sunnyside, Washington.  It depicts an elephant kicking the rear end of a donkey which a caricature of Barack Obama is riding.  It is a sign that shows a lack of tact, and is sure to offend the sensibilities of a large number of people, but is it racist?

I was talking to some folks in town about this sign recently, and got a number of reactions.  One person said that the only thing the billboard is showing is that the property owner is an ass!  (A few years ago, he put up some controversial signs and the city demanded he take them down.  He sued the city for violating his free speech rights, and eventually won a settlement.)

Another person exclaimed: “Have you seen that offensive billboard?  It is obviously racist!”

What do you think about this sign?

This video is a nice montage entitled “These Voices Don’t Speak For The Rest Of Us”, and captures some of the sentiments of why this election is so important.
