Remarks On Gun Rights At Sunnyside Council

Monday night, I made the following remarks about gun rights during the meeting of the Sunnyside City Council.  My thanks to the City Clerk for researching the text of Ordinance No. 15 (passed in 1902).  In the future, I would like to make a visit to the city archives to see some of the other treasures our city’s founders bestowed to us.  It is my great pleasure to serve the people, and promote freedom everywhere I can.

STATEMENT ON GUN RIGHTS, 1/28/13 SUNNYSIDE CITY COUNCIL MEETING

Recent discussion of gun rights has prompted a public response from some officials in our state. These responses include remarks from the governor, the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, our legislators, and also our county sheriff.

Some are begging for more government control over citizens, and think they should be in charge of allowing them to possess firearms, and where (if ever), they should be allowed to carry them. Others advocate for greater freedom, pushing for increased rights of individuals.

Yakima County Sheriff Ken Irwin issued a statement last week in which he cited the U.S. and State of Washington Constitutions. He later clarified that he is opposed to the proposed ban on certain types of firearms that is being put forward by the President and his allies in Congress.

Elected officials take an oath to uphold the federal and state constitutions mentioned by our sheriff. Unfortunately, some municipal government officials in Washington do not always respect that.

For example, on January 15, 2013, at a meeting of the City Council in Oak Harbor, a failed attempt to trample on the 2nd amendment rights of citizens occured. Video of the incident is making the rounds on the Internet.

During that meeting, a Councilman asked a gun rights supporter if he was carrying a firearm in council chambers. He demanded an answer even after the city attorney said the citizen was not obligated to give one. The citizen did choose to answer, and confirmed he has a Concealed Pistol License, and was carrying a firearm.

In response, the councilman made an unconstitutional motion to strip the citizen of his firearm on the spot. The motion failed, causing the Mayor of Oak Harbor to apologize to the citizen for the behavior of some of his colleagues, and spoke to the oath of office that all electeds take. The councilman who made the motion left the meeting rather than stay in a room where citizens exercise their right to bear arms.

I would like to take just a moment to remind my colleagues, and members of the public, just what our oath of office supports, as it relates to gun rights.

The 2nd amendment of the US Constitution states:

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

For those that question whether that applies to individual citizens; can you imagine George Washington leading an army if citizens did not possess firearms?

The other constitution that warrants our attention, is our own Washington State Constitution. Article I, Section 24 has the relevant language on the right to bear arms:

The right of the individual citizen to bear arms in defense of himself, or the state, shall not be impaired, but nothing in this section shall be construed as authorizing individuals or corporations to organize, maintain or employ an armed body of men.

If one is still in doubt, our state constitution is much more explicit in its language that the right to bear arms is an individual right.

This is not a new debate among the people, nor is it the first time restrictions have been proposed by politicians.

Our city founders first regulated the rights of citizens to carry weapons within three months of the city’s founding. Ordinance No. 15 Prohibiting Carrying Concealed Weapons and Fixing Punishment Therefor was passed in 1902. This handwritten ordinance was signed by our first Mayor, James Henderson. One should take note that at the time, the city also did not allow gambling, alcohol, or dancing.

Times have changed since then, and I am not about to suggest we take away our citizen’s guns, anymore than I want to take away their dance halls or their beer! In over 110 years as a city, our citzens have repeatedly demonstrated at the ballot box that they prefer more freedom over less freedom.

In the present day, citizens of Sunnyside may obtain a Concealed Pistol License by submitting an application through our local police department. I encourage everyone to do this, even if they do not own a firearm.

By exercising their rights, citizens can send a message to politicians that they do not want more government restrictions on personal freedoms. When more citizens apply for a Concealed Pistol License, it demonstrates that the people are serious about maintaining their rights and personal safety, as outlined by both our federal and state constitutions.

WA State OSPI Pushes Gun Control On Twitter

The Washington State Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, led by Randy Dorn, is the state’s lead agency for education.  They also are advocating for gun control.

On their official Twitter account yesterday they re-tweeted President Obama and Vice President Biden’s post regarding their press conference where new gun control measures were being discussed.

The White House ‏@whitehouse

Happening now: President Obama & @VP Biden announce proposals to reduce gun violence: http://at.wh.gov/gRO4m

Retweeted by WA State OSPI

I responded by asking WA State OSPI to stop this, and focus on their organization’s purpose. This resulted in an exchange with another individual on Twitter, and prompted a response from WA State OSPI:

Jason R. Raines ‏@BlogSunnyside

@waOSPI please stop retweeting White House pitches for gun control, this is not your agency’s mission. #wcot #waleg #waelex

Brock Howell ‏@BrockRides

@BlogSunnyside I support @waOSPI. When children get massacred in schools, gun control unfortunately becomes part of their mission. #waleg

Jason R. Raines ‏@BlogSunnyside

@BrockRides @waOSPI Beg to differ; retweeting the White House legislative wishlist is not advancing the cause of education in this state.

@BlogSunnyside It may help prevent their kids from getting killed. @waOSPI

@BlogSunnyside Student and school safety is part of our mission. A safe school is a positive learning environment. http://bit.ly/Vmp7ev

Jason R. Raines ‏@BlogSunnyside

@waOSPI may I point out that guns are already legally banned at schools? Please redirect your focus. #wcot #waleg

Given that guns are already banned in schools, WA State OSPI apparently wants to control what you do with them at home, or whether you are allowed to have them at all.  Is this what our elected leader of education should be focusing on?

In my opinion, this irrational fear of firearms is due to a failure of the American education system to properly instruct our children.

Children should be taught to have a respect for life, and firearms safety.  When I was a child in a public high school, one of my teachers gave me a rifle and ammunition, and told me to fire.  This was during class, and on the school campus.

My school had an indoor firing range, and fielded a competitive rifle team made up of students firing .22 cal bolt action rifles.

We also received hunter safety instruction, which is a requirement for those wanting to get a hunting license.

Instead of trying to run people’s homes, our schools should be teaching important life skills. Unfortunately, our current crop of educational elites does not see it that way.  They seem to think that government makes better parents than parents.

Electoral College Prediction: Romney 291 – Obama 247

With 11 days to go, I am going to make a prediction on how the Electoral College votes will be distributed.

My prediction: Romney 291, Obama 247

This is just an exercise in fun, and if you wish to offer your own predictions, please respond and let me know.  The only caveat is that you are not allowed to leave any states in “toss up” status.  You must make a prediction as to which way it will go.

Nebraska and Maine potentially split electoral votes between candidates, and if you think that will happen, please let me know.  I don’t think this will happen in 2012, and my prediction shows all votes going to one candidate or the other from each state.

Obama Campaign Manager Showing Anxiety

The Obama campaign is starting to show signs of serious anxiety following the Supreme Court ruling on Obamacare, and the resulting bounce it is giving Republican Presidential contender Mitt Romney.  This is apparent in a new email from Jim Messina, Campaign Manager, Obama for America.  He sent the message as an appeal to Obama supporters, but states that things are not looking good for Obama.

Here is some of what he said:

Obama-Biden Email Logo

Romney and the Republicans announced yesterday that they brought in more than $100 million in June.

For context, that’s about what we raised in April and May combined.

We’re still tallying our own numbers, but this means their gap is getting wider, and if it continues at this pace, it could cost us the election.

…If we don’t take this seriously now, we risk finding ourselves at a point where there is too much ground to make up.
If Jim Messina and the Obama campaign are taking things “seriously” when sending out this email, I wonder how they feel about today’s jobs numbers showing more Americans went on disability than found new jobs:

Josh Romney Fires Up Washington Republicans

Before Josh Romney started speaking to Republican supporters in Tacoma, the Romney campaign played a video clip of Rick Santorum urging his campaign supporters to back Romney during the Washington State Republican Party Convention.  Delegates and other supporters came to a special reception held just down the street from the convention center in order to hear directly from Romney’s son on Thursday night.

Josh Romney received a very enthusiastic welcome from those assembled.  He spoke proudly of his multiple visits to Washington during this campaign.  Josh said it was a big win during the Washington caucuses held this past March, and helped Romney gain momentum in winning delegates for the nomination.

Josh said part of campaigning is the pressure of knowing that people are owed for the hard work they are doing to get the candidate elected.  He said his Dad is working 18 hours a day campaigning across the country.

Josh said that Romney is keeping pace with Obama, but that if you think about the last four years, you can imagine how bad it would be to have another four years of him.  He also recognized the efforts of Ron Paul and his supporters in doing everything possible to ensure that Obama is defeated in November.

Referring to Obama’s criticism of Mitt Romney for work at Bain Capital, Josh acknowledged that his father was not always successful in every investment, but that he was successful far more often than he wasn’t.  Further, he learned from his failures, and work with the Olympics, and knows what it takes to create jobs to help America.

In comparing that record to Obama, Josh points out that Obama does a “public sector investment” in Solyndra.  Josh finds it interesting that Obama would criticize his father for his investment deals, when he is losing investment money made with other people’s money.

Josh said Mitt is running because of his 18 grandchildren, and could be spending time doing things besides staying in hotel rooms across the country.

He also told of how after the last race, his mother told Mitt that if she ever thought about him running again, he should take her, shake her, and slap her across the face.

Mitt replied, “You also said that after every pregnancy!”

Josh added that there were five children in his family, and he must have said that after each one of them were born.

In concluding, Josh Romney thanked the campaign supporters for working to make Mitt Romney the next President of the United States.

Dino Rossi Introduces Romney’s Son To Supporters In Tacoma

Rossi Introduces Josh Romney to Campaign Supporters

This week all Republicans in Washington are watching what is going on in Tacoma.  It is the Washington State Republican Party Convention, with delegates and supporters  gathered from all around, in part to select delegates to the party’s national convention that will be held in Tampa, Florida later this year.

Thursday evening, supporters of Mitt Romney were invited to a special reception at a nearby hotel, where they had a chance to hear from his son Josh.  But first, they were treated to an introduction by Washington Republican stalwart: Dino Rossi.

Rossi is Co-Chair of Washington’s Romney campaign.  He says that in every email he sends out, he includes the phrase “Saving the free world” because that is what it is all about.  Rossi pointed out 50,000 people turned out for Republican caucuses in March, and voted for an overwhelming Romney victory in our state.

Gingrich and Santorum campaigns are fully behind Romney, and are supporting a Romney slate of delegates for the national convention.  Rossi alluded to “Brand X” supporting another slate (a reference to Ron Paul supporters who are trying to elect delegates as well.)

Rossi states that we have a businessman running against a man who has never had a real job in his life. He elaborated saying, “I don’t consider being a community agitator for ACORN to be a real job.”  He concluded by saying he is excited about Romney running for President.

Video Included: Doc Hastings Speaks To Yakima County Republicans

A link to complete video of Hastings’ speech is included at the end of this post.

This past Friday night, Congressman Doc Hastings gave a speech that “revved up” the crowd, as a local newspaper headline put it. The speech was given to the Yakima County Republicans at their annual Lincoln Day Dinner. This year, the event was held at the Clarion Hotel in Yakima.

Hastings said that the Lincoln Day Dinner in the year following an election is the kickoff for the next year’s election. He joked that every year he always says that the upcoming election is the most important one we have ever had for this country. However, he said it really is the most important this time.

“If you wanted to pay off a trillion-dollar debt, and you wanted to pay it off at a rate of $1 million per day, it would take you over 3,000 years to pay it off. Our national debt is now over $14 trillion,” said Hastings.

In the two years since Obama took office, Hastings noted, there has been a 25% increase in the debt as expressed as a portion of our GDP.  He said that entitlement spending is now 60% of our budget, and that we are kidding the young generations if we don’t do something about this level of spending.

“Programs such as Medicare and Medicaid have already tried some things that Congressman Paul Ryan proposes in his budget plan, and they have worked,” said Hastings. Welfare reform put more decision-making into the hands of the states, and has worked well in the past 15 years. He further said that the same thing can be done with Medicare and Medicaid through block grants to the states.

Hastings pointed out that Medicare Part D (the prescription drug benefit) has come in 40% under its projected budget. The reason for this, he said, is that the private industry has been brought in to provide services for this.

“When you allow the American people to make decisions that are best for them in their personal lives, you get the best results for the country,” said Hastings.

Congressman Hastings is the Chair of the National Resources Committee, and he noted that Obama’s actions are 180 degrees opposite of what he says. In 2008, gas prices went over $4 per gallon. At that time, there were Congressional and Presidential prohibitions on drilling for oil off California and Atlantic coasts.

When Obama took office, he closed off drilling areas on both coasts, with the exception of an area off of Virginia, and also closed off more areas in Alaska.

Hastings said that energy is vitally important to our economy, and that we have national security aspect the demands that we develop energy in our own country.

Our founding fathers put checks and balances into our government, and elections are part of that process, he said. In the last election, we had 80 new people join my caucus in Washington D.C. These new folks are making a huge difference in changing the debate in our country, he said. Hastings said that we control one-half of one-third of the government, so there is a lot of work left to do.

In closing, Congressman Hastings said:

“I am not prepared to say I am going to be a candidate in 2012, but I will say this, I can’t see myself not being a candidate in 2012!”
