Coffee Talk With Dino Rossi

Dino Rossi came to Sunnyside, Washington today, and we had a conversation about his campaign at Guerra’s Coffee Co. on South First Street.

U.S. Senate Candidate Dino Rossi with Aaron Guerra, owner of Guerra's Coffee Co. in Sunnyside, WA.

I asked Mr. Rossi how small businesses, such as the one in which we were enjoying some refreshing beverages, could benefit by his election to the U.S. Senate:

Rossi responded by saying “I will be one of the few Senators in Washington D.C. that knows what it is like to sign the front side of a paycheck.”  He went on to describe his own personal experience that includes starting out at the age of 17 working as a janitor.  He said as a business owner, he knows what it is like to work with no salary, and no benefits.  ”If you don’t work, you don’t eat”, said Rossi, about being a small business entrepreneur.

Expressing concerns about the new financial reform bill being passed in Congress, Rossi said it will kill liquidity in banks and financial institutions which provide loans to small businesses.

Rossi pointed out that Patty Murray is proud of the healthcare bill she supported, which will be a $500 billion tax increase, taking money away from small businesses, putting it into government instead, with the I.R.S. being in charge.  The ultimate goal of the program Murray supports is to have a single payer system, which will be run with all the compassion of an I.R.S. agent.  Rossi said that is not the kind of healthcare system he wants, and that most Americans don’t want either.

Murray has never had a private sector job in her life, said Rossi.  Since the 1960′s, 64% of job growth has come from small businesses, and it is increasingly difficult for them to find loans and investors to fund their growth and expansion.  Rossi said that too many in Washington D.C. have no experience as an entrepreneur, or being a business owner, and that it is unrealistic to expect that solutions to our economic problems will come from them.

When asked about the call from some people to simply vote out all the incumbents, Rossi said we must pay attention to how people in office are actually voting, and that we shouldn’t always paint with such a broad brush.  However, he said that “Frankly, both Republicans and Democrats contributed to the out of control spending and growth in government that caused this problem.”

He said that for small businesses to succeed, they need low or modest taxation.  They also need stable, predictable, regulation from government.  Acting in opposition to this, is Senator Patty Murray, who Rossi pointed out, has voted for every single spending bill since 2004.

He said that the uncontrolled spending started under Bush, but has continued on steroids under Obama, with the full support of Patty Murray.  ”We can not stimulate our way to a good economy.  What part of broke does Murray not understand?”, said Rossi.

Rossi raised $1.4 million in one month of campaigning during the last quarter.  Murray raised $1.6 million, but took the entire quarter to do it.  I asked Rossi how competitive he felt his campaign would be, in the context of fundraising.  He said he was fortunate to have so many people contribute to his campaign already, and that he felt confident he would be successful in raising enough to tell his story, and defend himself from attacks.

“Murray has an indefensible record of taxing and spending”, he said.  Although he felt confident about raising enough to tell his story, he also felt that his campaign needs to do even more.  Rossi pointed out that he has over 29,000 people who “like” his page on Facebook, and follow updates from this campaign there.  He is impressed with the tremendous support and communication abilities that Facebook offers.  Facebook supporters used their friends and contacts to turn out a large group of supporters for him at a parade in Skagit County recently.  This all happened at the last-minute, with the supporters spontaneously showing up to march with him during the event.  Supporters also follow him on Twitter @DinoRossiWA, and get updates from his campaign headquarters @DinoRossiHQ.

Rossi pointed out that he has been successful in the past campaigning against an incumbent for State Senate, even when that earlier opponent outspent him by a margin of 20%.  ”The reality is that I have the support of the people with me; Murray’s number one source of fundraising is from lobbyists.”

Before leaving to continue campaigning in eastern Washington, Rossi said that he needs the support of everyone, by going to his campaign website, dinorossi.com, volunteering, knocking on doors, and giving financial support in any amount they are comfortable contributing.  He also said that once elected, he needs people to keep supporting him, and not to abandon him.  He will need input from the community, and wants citizens to stay involved to help implement the major course correction that he and other conservative candidates hope to bring to Washington D.C.

2010 WSRP State Convention Opening Video

It has now been a week since the Washington State Republican Party had its State Convention.  I was fortunate to be able to attend as a delegate, and can’t possibly relate what the entire experience was like on this blog.  However, through my posts, I have provided some information that gives you, dear reader, some idea of the issues that were discussed.  In the coming week, I will post an article on a voter initiative that looks likely to be certified for the ballot this fall.  In the meantime, take a look at this YouTube video that was presented to delegates at the start of the convention.  It is a good quality production from the Washington State Republican Party.

Mitt Romney’s Speech To Washington State Republicans

Yesterday, former Massachuset’s Governor and Presidential candidate Mitt Romney gave a speech to delegates gathered for the Washington State Republican Party Convention, in Vancouver.

Romney speaks to Washington State Republican Party Delegates at their 2010 convention in Vancouver.

Romney gave a motivational speech, stating that it had only been a year since Time magazine ran a cover with an elephant, questioning whether it was an endangered species.  His retort, which he gave to delegates, was that the elephant is now on the move, and will run over the donkeys in this year’s elections.

The former governor hit on themes of federal overspending, increasing taxes, the government takeover of healthcare, contrasting how Republicans will work to limit government overreach and cut the national debt and deficits.

Romney pointed out that all of Obama’s future budget projections include trillion-dollar deficits.  ”Think about how much money that is”, he said.  ”No one can afford this; are there any trillionaires in the audience today?”

He went to express his concern about Obama’s actions, and how instead of helping the economy, it was actually causing harm.  The reason is that all the increased costs, deficit spending, and proposed regulations create lots of uncertainty in the business environment, which discourages hiring and risk taking by entrepreneurs.

Reflecting on our nation’s history, Romney pointed out that our founders discussed having a king, or a strong central government, and rejected both ideas.  Instead, they chose to let people have their own dreams, and the freedom to follow those dreams as they chose to live their lives.

He also said that spending future generations’ money was morally wrong, and that Republicans will put a stop to this when they regain control in Washington D.C.

“When we get in charge again, we will get the economy going again by balancing the budget, and holding spending and taxes down” said Romney.

Obama was also criticized during his speech for not even meeting with the CEO of BP after the enormous environmental disaster occurring in the Gulf of Mexico.  ”Obama has not taken personal responsibility for his role in  crisis management.  He seeks to blame others, instead of looking for solutions.”

In concluding his speech, Romney blasted Obama for his world “apology” tour, which he said serves to make our enemies consider us as weak, and frightens our allies.

Romney pointed out that the British press reports that never has an American President been this apologetic for his own country, while on foreign soil.

He said that this is a great land because Americans have the freedom to choose their own path.  That America is synonymous with freedom around the world, and that there has never been a reason to apologize for America.

Let South Korea Strike North Korea

No Declaration of War Needed:

They’ve Already Got One

North Korean Torpedo Sank South Korean Naval Ship

When the liberals of the New York Times Editorial board, and conservatives at the Heritage Foundation agree, you know that the common people are about to get royally screwed.  In this case, the common people are those being oppressed under North Korean rule.

The Heritage Foundation posted an article on their website titled U.S. Must Respond Firmly To North Korean Naval Attack.  Meanwhile, the New York Times published an editorial entitled: The Sinking of the Cheonan.

Both groups advocate additional and tougher trade sanctions against North Korea, seeking a resolution from the U.N. Security Council condemning the action, and having China apply diplomatic leverage against North Korea in hopes of getting them to behave more rationally.

An exhaustive multinational study, consisting of both military and civilian experts have concluded that the South Korean ship Cheonan was recently sunk by a North Korean torpedo.  Following the brazen and unprovoked attack by what is believed to be a North Korean submarine, the New York Times has praised South Korea for being “prudent”, and not blaming the North immediately.  They also praised the South for not taking military action as a response.

Allow me to suggest a different course of action.  It is my belief that everyone, from nation states to individuals, always has the right to defend themselves.  South Korea is a fully industrialized economic powerhouse, with an army larger than that of the United States.  They are fully capable of striking into the North, and realizing the long sought goal of unifying the Koreas under a free and representative form of government.

We should let them.  Not only that, we should encourage them to do it.  North Korea is already testing primitive nuclear devices, has a large arsenal of chemical weapons, and for some inexplicable reason, has been removed from our watch list of nations that sponsor terrorism.  The two Koreas are still technically at war, having only a negotiated cease-fire.  Now that North Korea has torpedoed a South Korean ship, the South is fully within its rights to retaliate with full force.

Kim Jong-Il has behaved in unstable ways for many years.  One can argue he is much more a threat to world peace than Saddam Hussein ever was.  We should therefore encourage South Korea to implement our foreign policy of “spreading democracy” by military force, and invasion of other countries.  We have our own military tied down in fighting on two fronts already, so we should step aside and let the capable forces of South Korea take care of the job.  We can provide logistical support and equipment to help make it easier.

Having a fully unified Korea, allied with us, right on China’s border, would be of huge strategic advantage to us.  Naturally, the Chinese may not think so, and therein lies the true danger to the United States.  What if China stops producing goods for Wal-Mart, or lending Obama money for his ever expanding government takeover of our U.S. economy?

So much for that idea, our big-government/multi-national corporate cabal would never go for it.  I might be classified as a dinosaur for saying so, but General Douglas MacArthur had the right idea when he sought to unify the entire Korean Peninsula all those years ago.  It’s now time to finish the job, only this time, we can outsource the job to the people who will actually live there, the Koreans themselves.

Even if the status quo is maintained, with the country of Korea being divided, we should withdraw our Army. If for no other reason than we can not afford to keep our troops there. The Republic of Korea has come a long way since the 1950′s. They can handle North Korea while we support them in other ways.

National Day Of Prayer Observed In Sunnyside

The National Day of Prayer was observed locally today at Centennial Square in downtown Sunnyside.  A group of about twenty church leaders and citizens attended the thirty minute ceremony.  Despite a federal judge declaring the National Day of Prayer unconstitutional, believers in Sunnyside and across the nation continue to observe the National Day of Prayer in their own communities.  The National Day of Prayer has been observed informally since the 18th century, but was not formally codified into law until President Truman signed the act requiring a Presidential Proclamation in 1952.  Barack Obama issued such a proclamation again this year (despite the judge’s ruling), but unlike his predecessor George W. Bush, he will not be publicly observing the event in Washington D.C.

Dan Hotchkiss of First Christian Church starts the National Day of Prayer observance while Bob North of Neighborhood Church leads praise music with his guitar.

Those present in Sunnyside today sang “Open The Eyes Of My Heart” before beginning a series of prayers.  After singing the first song, leaders of the event asked those assembled to break into small groups, so that everyone would have an opportunity to lift up their own prayers.

Mike Hughes of First Baptist Church asks those present to form small groups for prayer.

The first topics for prayer were for city government, schools and education, businesses and business leaders, and military personnel.  The group then stopped to sing the song “Lord, I Lift Your Name On High”.  Prayer then continued for state government, national government, effective ministry by local congregations, for needs of Sunnyside and Yakima Valley residents, and for needs of people around the nation.

The group concluded with another song “Bind Us Together”.

On April 30, 2010, The White House issued its annual proclamation for the National Day of Prayer.  The following is the text of the Presidential Proclamation, as posted on The White House website:

Presidential Proclamation–National Day of Prayer

A PROCLAMATION

Throughout our history, whether in times of great joy and thanksgiving, or in times of great challenge and uncertainty, Americans have turned to prayer.  In prayer, we have expressed gratitude and humility, sought guidance and forgiveness, and received inspiration and assistance, both in good times and in bad.

On this day, let us give thanks for the many blessings God has bestowed upon our Nation.  Let us rejoice for the blessing of freedom both to believe and to live our beliefs, and for the many other freedoms and opportunities that bring us together as one Nation.  Let us ask for wisdom, compassion, and discernment of justice as we address the great challenges of our time.

We are blessed to live in a Nation that counts freedom of conscience and free exercise of religion among its most fundamental principles, thereby ensuring that all people of goodwill may hold and practice their beliefs according to the dictates of their consciences.  Prayer has been a sustaining way for many Americans of diverse faiths to express their most cherished beliefs, and thus we have long deemed it fitting and proper to publicly recognize the importance of prayer on this day across the Nation.

Let us remember in our thoughts and prayers those suffering from natural disasters in Haiti, Chile, and elsewhere, and the people from those countries and from around the world who have worked tirelessly and selflessly to render aid.  Let us pray for the families of the West Virginia miners, and the people of Poland who so recently and unexpectedly lost many of their beloved leaders.  Let us pray for the safety and success of those who have left home to serve in our Armed Forces, putting their lives at risk in order to make the world a safer place.  As we remember them, let us not forget their families and the substantial sacrifices that they make every day.  Let us remember the unsung heroes who struggle to build their communities, raise their families, and help their neighbors, for they are the wellspring of our greatness.  Finally, let us remember in our thoughts and prayers those people everywhere who join us in the aspiration for a world that is just, peaceful, free, and respectful of the dignity of every human being.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim May 6, 2010, as a National Day of Prayer.  I call upon the citizens of our Nation to pray, or otherwise give thanks, in accordance with their own faiths and consciences, for our many freedoms and blessings, and I invite all people of faith to join me in asking for God’s continued guidance, grace, and protection as we meet the challenges before us.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this thirtieth day of April, in the year of our Lord two thousand ten, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-fourth.

BARACK OBAMA

Limited Government Does Not Mean Anarchy

Anarchy can be defined as a state of society without government or law.  I am not in favor of lawlessness.  To be sure, I am for a limited government, and generally oppose growth of government.  However, we need some basic government functioning in order to protect our individual rights.

We need police to protect us from law breakers who do not respect our rights.  We also need a military to defend our nation from certain threats to our society.

Sunnyside is in a state of crisis due to out of control gangs, drug pushers, and other criminals.  Many of these gangs think that guns like those pictured above are cool.  They are trying desperately to obtain them, and use them.  This is a disturbing trend in our local gang culture.  Sunnyside is subjected to shooting incidents almost every weekend now.  These incidents are not related to law abiding gun lovers who purchase firearms for sport or self-defense.  The guns are being used to deprive others of their rights, by some really bad people.

It is past time to retake our city.  On Tuesday night the police department hosted a meeting for landlords, to discuss a draft version of a proposed “crime free housing” ordinance.

The proposed ordinance would provide a mechanism to have landlords execute an emergency style eviction of tenants within three business days of being notified by police that they have gang or drug activity going on in a rental space.  Landlords who do not comply with the ordinance could be subjected to fines or other penalties.

The ordinance would provide for mandatory training of landlords and/or their agents on crime prevention, and city ordinances related to rental properties.  The police would provide this training free of charge.

In addition, tenants would need to have a local police records check completed before they can sign a lease agreement within city limits.  Again, there would not be a charge for the police to conduct this service under the draft being discussed at the meeting.

The intent is to weed out gangs and drugs that are at the center of many issues the city is confronting at this time.

With bullets flying through town, it is necessary to take additional actions to protect the safety of the citizens.  One gentleman asked me if I thought the expansion of government could be a good thing.  I suppose when people are dying in the streets, then yes, it can be a good thing.

He also asked if I would support such an ordinance if President Obama had written it.  Yes, I would.  It does not matter who wrote it.  The substance is what’s important.  Everyone has a right to be safe.  Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are being denied by an out of control criminal element.  This proposed ordinance is just one tool that can be added to the community kit bag.

My thanks go out to the Sunnyside Police Department, Assistant Chief Phil Schenck who led discussion at the meeting, Chief Radder, Mayor Restucci, and Council Members Gehlen and Farmer for attending this meeting.  Thanks also to all the landlords and other citizens who showed up, asked questions, and offered suggestions to make the ordinance better.  My apologies to any officials who I have failed to mention in this post.  It is great to see such a great team effort across a wide range of community stakeholders.

The ordinance will be undergoing review by the city’s legal firm soon.  Afterwards, it will be put on the agenda for the City Council.  Like all proposed ordinances, multiple readings would need to be done before the ordinance can be formally adopted.
