What Do You Really Know About Rush Limbaugh?

AN ARMY OF ONE

Rush Limbaugh: An Army of One

Considering how many years that Rush Limbaugh has been on the radio, and his countless hours of broadcasting, how much do you really know about the man?  What was his family life like when he was growing up?  What was he like in high school?  What do people who have worked with Rush think about him?

Zev Chafets wrote a profile of the man for the New York Times Magazine.  Later, he expanded his piece, and this book is the result.

Very few books have been written about Rush Limbaugh that do not include the words fat, liar, and idiot in the title.  Chafets makes a serious effort to give readers a true biographical sketch of the man.  He is one of the few people from the media that Rush grants access to.

While the author gives a mostly positive portrayal of Limbaugh, he deals head-on with some of the most controversial aspects of the radio man’s life.  Rush’s drug use, multiple divorces, and battles with ESPN and the NFL over the issue of race are given their fair share of attention in the book.

For a man that is so famous, and so influential, it is amazing how few authors have written about Limbaugh’s personal life in such a meaningful way.  Readers will learn how Rush got into radio in the first place, including his non-traditional path to making his career.

The book was published in the early part of 2010, prior the Republicans regaining majority control of the House of Representatives.  In its final chapters, the book is a little out of date on its political analysis, but is still worth a read.

Whether one is fan of Rush Limbaugh or not, he is not to be underestimated.

Michelle Malkin Motivates GOP Faithful

Michelle Malkin was the keynote speaker Friday night during the Washington State Republican Party convention in Vancouver. She started her speech with remarks about being labelled a “firebrand conservative” in a local newspaper.

Michelle Malkin, Fox News contributor, blogger, and former writer for the Seattle Times addresses the Washington State Republic Party convention in Vancouver.

“What do they mean by ‘firebrand conservative’?”  She asked delegates and guests.

Malkin then said “I guess they mean little, conservative women, about five feet, two or three inches tall!”

She went on to call for free markets, lower spending, lower taxes, and less regulations.  The audience enthusiastically responded; even when she criticized “progressives” that had infiltrated both the state and national Party organizations.

“America was pre-socialized by George W. Bush, who paved the way for Obama’s full-blown bailouts of carmakers, banks, Fannie Mae, AIG, Freddie Mac, and others” said Malkin.

She did not hesitate to call for strong policies on immigration, stating that the Party must stay strong in the face of criticisms of being “nativist, immigrant haters, or racists”.  Malkin, who is of Filipino descent, pointed out she has more brown skin than Michelle Obama and she wasn’t deterred by such unfair labels.

She wrapped up her presentation by calling for electing great numbers of conservatives in 2010.

“There are three things I am looking for in a politician” she told those in attendance.  ”They should say what they mean, mean what they say, and vote the way they speak!”

Malkin received a standing ovation from those in attendance.

Clintons Stay Together, Gores Getting Divorced

Believe It Or Not!

Bill and Hillary Clinton are still together, while Al and Tipper Gore are separating, and presumably getting a divorce.

Al Gore was my Senator, when I was a child in Tennessee.  I can still remember when he was running for President, not in 2000, but in 1988.  He was only 39 years old at the time.

As a Senator, he was much more conservative in his political positions, than he is now.  He was Pro-Life, and did not resemble the man who ran for President in 2000. Because he did not reflect the man that had been elected Senator from Tennessee, the state voted to cast its electoral votes for George W. Bush that year.

Tipper Gore was noteworthy during the time I was in high school, for championing a rating system for record labels.  At the time, it was very controversial, but the end result is that we now see warning labels saying “Parental Advisory: Explicit Lyrics” on many album covers.  MTV and my high school peers derided this as “censorship”.  I tended to view it was allowing parents to make an informed purchasing decision.  (I was never a cool kid.)

While I know nothing of the Gore’s private lives, and relationship with each other, it is sad to see a marriage of 40 years coming to an end.  It seems to me that failing marriages occur all to often in our society today.  There are many reasons for this, perhaps as varied as each individual marriage relationship.  I sincerely wish that divorce was not so prevalent in our society.

Political Humor: Since 1773

This video is making its way around as a humorous take on the liberal insult of “teabagger”.

The video is “Since 1773″, and I found it entertaining.  Enjoy!

Political Humor: Conservative Or Liberal?

If a conservative doesn’t like guns, he doesn’t buy one.

  • If a liberal doesn’t like guns, he wants all guns outlawed.

If a conservative is a vegetarian, he doesn’t eat meat.

  • If a liberal is a vegetarian, he wants all meat products banned for everyone.

If a conservative is homosexual, he quietly leads his life.

  • If a liberal is homosexual, he demands legislated respect.

If a conservative is down-and-out, he thinks about how to better his situation.

  • A liberal wonders who is going to take care of him.

If a conservative doesn’t like a talk show host, he switches channels.

  • Liberals demand that those they don’t like be shut down.

If a conservative is a non-believer, he doesn’t go to church.

  • A liberal non-believer wants any mention of God and religion silenced. (Unless it’s a foreign religion, of course!)

If a conservative decides he needs health care, he goes about shopping for it, or may choose a job that provides it.

  • A liberal demands that the rest of us pay for his.

If a conservative reads this, he’ll have a good laugh.

  • A liberal will be offended and accuse me of “hate language.”

Scott Brown Betrayed Us?

There is much talk about Scott Brown and  the “Jobs Bill”.  Lets be clear that the  Jobs Bill is another Stimulus Package;  just with a different name. Doesn’t “jobs” sound better than “stimulus” ?

Many are furious and disappointed at the vote Scott Brown took.  The label traitor, among others, has been thrown at him.  I do not think he betrayed “us”,  because he isn’t one of “us”.

By “us”, I mean conservatives.  During his campaign, people tried to portray him as a conservative, something he never was.  I believe he is a moderate that will continue siding with the Democrats on various votes to come.

Isn’t Scott Brown a better deal than Martha Coakley would have been?  I strongly believe so!  With this vote he just showed his true colors, certainly not conservative.

We are better off with Brown than we would have been with Coakley.  Coakley was pushing a government control of healthcare,  the repeal of DOMA, gun control and much more.

I was never a fan of Scott Brown, nor was I parading in the streets when he won.  I just  felt somewhat content that we kept a radical liberal out of office.  Let us get used to the fact that Scott Brown is not a conservative, and never was.  We betrayed ourselves thinking he was and found out during his first month of office.

And The New Author Is…

BLOGSUNNYSIDE ANNOUNCES NAME OF NEW AUTHOR

New Author Posts Will Start Being Published Tomorrow

Today, we are one step closer to having another author publish posts on this blog.  The new author will be contributing posts on topics of his choosing, and will be expressing his own opinions about them.  As such, whatever is posted by one author is not necessarily the opinion of other contributors to the blog.

The new author is from the Lower Yakima Valley, and is a graduate of a local high school.  He has had experience in a “job shadow” program, where he got to see first hand how Washington State Senators work.  While engaged in this, the new author was able to shadow our own Senator Jim Honeyford (R-15th Legislative District), who is from Sunnyside.

He is a self-described political Conservative, and has been active during the last year supporting efforts to get R-71 on the ballot.  The voter referendum in 2009 passed a state-wide vote, and redefined marriage in the state of Washington.  The new author took a stand for traditional marriage and family values during this past election season.

In addition, the new author was instrumental in the Special Election for 15th District Representative.  He was the Campaign Manager for State Representative David Taylor (R-Moxee), who handily defeated the Democrat challenger.  Taylor’s opponent conceded the race many weeks before election day.

So just who is this mystery man?  He is a bright up and comer, and friend of this blog…

Diego Trejo

Watch for his first post to be published tomorrow.  Diego is the first contributor to be added to the blog, so hopefully we won’t have any technical issues with getting his post up for you tomorrow.  This is new territory, and the prospects are exciting.

2010 promises to offer you even more political content.  We are boldly going where no blog has gone before.

Kirby Wilbur Show Cancelled

For many years, people in Seattle have been able to listen to a Conservative talk show with a local host: Kirby Wilbur.

His show has now been cancelled by the KVI radio station management, and will apparently be replaced with nationally syndicated Laura Ingraham.

Seattle listeners are losing a local host for another that is broadcasting out of radio nowhere.  Across the state of Washington, Conservatives are upset over the loss, but it unfortunately is part of a nationwide trend in radio.

We have seen a consolidation of  radio stations nationwide, with mega corporation ownership.  Monster companies like Clear Channel, Citadel, and others own 90%+ of the radio stations in many local markets.  In past years, these stations would have their own news departments, but in the bigger cities, they are being combined into just one news department.  They then play the same news on all of the company owned stations.

This means you listen to the same news being broadcast on six or more stations!  Where they used to compete with each other, you now have just one source of news.

In addition, it is generally cheaper for a station to play syndicated content, and not have staff on its payroll.  They don’t have to pay salary and benefits for Laura Ingraham, Rush Limbaugh, and the like, but they do have to pay this expense for someone like Kirby Wilbur.

Since I don’t spend much time in Seattle, I don’t listen to Kirby Wilbur very much.  I have tuned him in over the Internet occasionally, but I feel the loss of his program anyway.  He talked about Washington politics.  We are losing one of the watchdogs that helped keep the folks in Olympia under public scrutiny.  This is not a good thing for the people of Washington.

Earlier this year, I had the pleasure of attending an event in Yakima where Kirby Wilbur was one of the speakers.  While I don’t agree with him on many issues, I enjoyed listening to his take on things.

It is too early to know what Kirby Wilbur will be doing next, but I wish him the best of luck in whatever it may be!

Republican National Committee Fundraising Call

This morning I received a call from a very polite representative of the Republican National Committee.  She was conducting a fund-raising effort for the Republican Party.  Yes, I have given money to the Party during the past year, so I am on the list for mailings, and calls of this nature.

I am not happy with the current state of affairs with the Party.  The fund-raising pitch was about needing a conservative alternative to the liberal Obama/Democrat agenda.  I agree, but am frustrated that with a Republican President we do not have this alternative.  What we do have is more and more bailouts of bankers and multi-national businesses.  Even McCain is in favor of all this bailout madness.

I am also disappointed that during Chairman Duncan’s leadership we have seen the Republican Party lose control of Congress, and fail to win the White House.  The Republicans are not proposing any conservative alternative that I want to support right now.  The Party needs new leadership.

Surprisingly, Chairman Duncan is running for re-election.  The Party needs to replace him, and send a message that change involves focusing on conservative values.  This means doing more than just giving lip service to “limited government”.

I am still a Republican, but do not take my support for granted.  The so called “center-right” strategy of Duncan means more bailouts and bigger government.  Obama says the economy will tank unless the government intervenes more.  A real conservative will say the economy is tanking because government is involved in things it should leave alone.

I will continue to support the Republican Party, as it is the Party most likely to act on conservative values.  However, I will not promise or pledge support for 2009 until I see some commitment to conservative philosophy by Party leadership, and candidates.  I will be paying attention to CPAC this year, and how the Republican Party treats the speeches made there.  If the Party continues to endorse more moderation (i.e. bigger government), my resources will be devoted elsewhere.  If the Party demonstrates a renewed commitment to be the conservative Party, then I am on board.
