Bulldozers for McKenna Lots of Fun at Sunshine Days Parade

It was fun joining other supporters of Rob McKenna for Governor in the Sunshine Days Parade today.  Thanks also to State Representative David Taylor for having his own entry in the parade.  It is great to see the high school bands, beauty queens, cheerleaders, and businesses supporting a local event.

“Bulldozers for McKenna” happily rolled through Sunnyside during the Sunshine Days Parade today.

Political Humor:Are you a Democrat, a Republican, or a Southerner?

More humor from my Email inbox:

Are you a Democrat, a Republican, or a Southerner?

Here is a little test that will help you decide.

The answer can be found by posing the following question:

You’re walking down a

Deserted street with your wife

And two small children.

Suddenly, a Terrorist with a huge knife

Comes around the corner,

Locks eyes with you,

Screams obscenities,

Raises the knife, and charges at you…

You are carrying a

Kimber 1911 cal. 45 ACP, and you are an expert shot.

You have mere seconds before he reaches you and your family.

What do you do?

THINK CAREFULLY AND

THEN SCROLL DOWN:

Democrat’s Answer:

Well, that’s not enough information to answer the question!

What is a Kimber 1911 cal. 45 ACP?

Does the man look poor or oppressed?

Is he really a terrorist? Am I guilty of profiling?

Have I ever done anything to him that would inspire him to attack?

Could we run away?

What does my wife think?

What about the kids?

Could I possibly swing the gun like a club and knock the knife out of his hand?

What does the law say about this situation?

Does the pistol have appropriate safety built into it?

Why am I carrying a loaded gun anyway, and what kind of message does this send to society and to my children?

Is it possible he’d be happy with just killing me?

Does he definitely want to kill me, or would he be content just to wound me?

If I were to grab his knees and hold on, could my family get away while he was stabbing me?

Should I call 9-1-1?

Why is this street so deserted?

We need to raise taxes, have paint & weed day.

Can we make this a happier, healthier street that would discourage such behavior.

I need to debate this with some friends for a few days and try to come to a consensus.

This is all so confusing!

Political Division Of WA State House and Senate

Before the 2010 election, Democrats held a majority in both the Washington State Senate and House.  In the Senate, the Democrat Party had a majority of 31-18, with the House divided 61-37.

On election night things were looking good for Republicans, trying to win a majority in one or more of the State Legislature chambers.  While Republicans posted solid gains, several of the close races tipped towards the Democrats as late votes came in during the counting process.

This is a trend that was observed statewide in Federal and Legislative races.  In addition, the more conservative candidate for the Washington State Supreme Court saw his lead evaporate; vanishing completely, as his opponent squeaked into the position at the very end of the counting process.  (King County voters were largely responsible for this.)

While Republicans failed to get majority control in the Washington House and Senate, they still made impressive gains, and are better positioned for the next electoral cycle.  Democrat majorities in 2011 have been shaved to 27-22 in the Senate, and 56-42 in the House.

Rossi Concedes Race To Murray

The following statement has been released by the Rossi For Senate Campaign:

Bellevue, WA – U.S. Senate candidate Dino Rossi made the following statement regarding the Washington Senate race:

“This evening, I called Senator Murray to offer my congratulations on her re-election to the U.S. Senate.

“I ran for the Senate because I believe we need a basic course correction from where Washington, D.C. has been taking us and to make sure this country is as free, as strong and as prosperous in the future as it has been in the past to preserve the best of America for future generations.

“That was a message that found a very receptive audience all across this state, though not quite receptive enough.

“We’re sending at least one new person, maybe two, to Congress to represent Washington State. We elected a host of new people to the state legislature — all on the message of controlling spending and helping the private sector grow, saying no to government overreach and confronting some very difficult challenges in front of us.

You’ve heard me say during this campaign that the problems we face are too big for one political party. They are, and I can say that with absolute certainty.

“It is my hope that the new House and Senate will address them seriously, responsibly, and in a bipartisan way. I hope the President and Senate Democrats will join the new House majority to face these problems head on rather than leaving them for the next Congress or the next generation.

“My hope going forward is that our representatives in Washington, D.C. will be thinking about how an issue affects Bellevue, Bellingham or Bingen, not the D.C. Beltway.

“I hope they will be thinking about the small business owners struggling to stay open and the people that work there who are trying to pay their mortgage and feed their kids. I hope the things that are done in D.C. make it easier for these folks, not harder.

The lesson I leave you with is one we learned as kids: we’re all in this together. If Washington, D.C. doesn’t act to help the economy grow and solve this massive spending and debt, it’s going to hurt us all. It won’t distinguish by political party.

Let me close with one more heartfelt thank you to the people of our state. Thank you for letting me have an honest, straightforward discussion with you about our future.

“God bless you, our country, and this wonderful state we call home.”

Valley Political News

Yesterday night was an exciting night for voters and politicos throughout the Yakima Valley. Three races promised two winners and a defeatist.

The District Court race surprised many as Doug Federspiel and Mike Everett advanced to the general election, leaving Bronson Faul behind with under 15% of the vote. Bronson Faul had picked up the envious endorsements of Senator Jim Honeyford, Representatives David Taylor, Bruce Chandler, and Yakima Mayor Micah Cawley. Bronson Faul is young man and we’ll surely see him on our ballot in the near future.

County Commissioner Rand Elliott was up for re-election and was challenged by a fellow Republican and someone running under the Tea Party label. Kenneth Stevens, the Tea Party candidate famous for his “make sure you don’t get screwed” campaign slogan, has publically declared that he will refuse to take his $81,000 salary if elected. The incumbent Rand Elliott and the energetic Tea Party candidate will face each other in November. We could be up for a surprise!

The 14th legislative race has been the most exciting race in the county. The incumbent Norm Johnson(R) was challenged by Michele Strobel(R) and Scott Brumback(D). Johnson and Strobel secured a spot in the November ballot. This promises to be a vicious battle between a moderate and a conservative Republican. It will be interesting to see if the Democrat endorses any of the remaining candidates. The local Democratic Party refused to endorse Scott Brumback as he was too conservative. He was once a Republican PCO. I don’t blame them!
