Limited Government Does Not Mean Anarchy

Anarchy can be defined as a state of society without government or law.  I am not in favor of lawlessness.  To be sure, I am for a limited government, and generally oppose growth of government.  However, we need some basic government functioning in order to protect our individual rights.

We need police to protect us from law breakers who do not respect our rights.  We also need a military to defend our nation from certain threats to our society.

Sunnyside is in a state of crisis due to out of control gangs, drug pushers, and other criminals.  Many of these gangs think that guns like those pictured above are cool.  They are trying desperately to obtain them, and use them.  This is a disturbing trend in our local gang culture.  Sunnyside is subjected to shooting incidents almost every weekend now.  These incidents are not related to law abiding gun lovers who purchase firearms for sport or self-defense.  The guns are being used to deprive others of their rights, by some really bad people.

It is past time to retake our city.  On Tuesday night the police department hosted a meeting for landlords, to discuss a draft version of a proposed “crime free housing” ordinance.

The proposed ordinance would provide a mechanism to have landlords execute an emergency style eviction of tenants within three business days of being notified by police that they have gang or drug activity going on in a rental space.  Landlords who do not comply with the ordinance could be subjected to fines or other penalties.

The ordinance would provide for mandatory training of landlords and/or their agents on crime prevention, and city ordinances related to rental properties.  The police would provide this training free of charge.

In addition, tenants would need to have a local police records check completed before they can sign a lease agreement within city limits.  Again, there would not be a charge for the police to conduct this service under the draft being discussed at the meeting.

The intent is to weed out gangs and drugs that are at the center of many issues the city is confronting at this time.

With bullets flying through town, it is necessary to take additional actions to protect the safety of the citizens.  One gentleman asked me if I thought the expansion of government could be a good thing.  I suppose when people are dying in the streets, then yes, it can be a good thing.

He also asked if I would support such an ordinance if President Obama had written it.  Yes, I would.  It does not matter who wrote it.  The substance is what’s important.  Everyone has a right to be safe.  Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are being denied by an out of control criminal element.  This proposed ordinance is just one tool that can be added to the community kit bag.

My thanks go out to the Sunnyside Police Department, Assistant Chief Phil Schenck who led discussion at the meeting, Chief Radder, Mayor Restucci, and Council Members Gehlen and Farmer for attending this meeting.  Thanks also to all the landlords and other citizens who showed up, asked questions, and offered suggestions to make the ordinance better.  My apologies to any officials who I have failed to mention in this post.  It is great to see such a great team effort across a wide range of community stakeholders.

The ordinance will be undergoing review by the city’s legal firm soon.  Afterwards, it will be put on the agenda for the City Council.  Like all proposed ordinances, multiple readings would need to be done before the ordinance can be formally adopted.

The Ribmaster Has Arrived

Last weekend, a poll on this blog offered readers a choice of names the editor has been called lately.  The winner of the poll was “Ribmaster”.

Those who know me well, know that I like to grill out whenever the opportunity presents itself.  Yes, I cook burgers, hot dogs, and chicken.  However, ribs are especially delightful.  Recently, a friend of mine started calling me the “Ribmaster” in jest, and I threw that name into the poll for the heck of it.

I never imagined that the name would be the winner, but it is.  Of course, I “tickle the ribs” of the City Council and others, from time to time.  Some have said that I am a “thorn in the side” of Council Members also.  So there you have it, some varied reasons why Ribmaster Raines will be serving up more commentary in the future.

And now, some political entertainment news…

I enjoy listening to my MP3 player when driving down the road, and sometimes at night as well.  In addition to music, I load mine up with the occasional audio book, or download political content to listen to.

Always striving for thriftiness, I look for content where there is no charge for making downloads.

This week, I stumbled upon a site called OutLoudOpinion, which features editorial content from a variety of sources.  They have articles from Investor’s Business Daily, The New Republic, Reason Magazine, as well as talk shows like The Steve Gill Show (a host in the Nashville area), G. Gordon Liddy, and others.  All the content is available for podcasting, and I am enjoying it immensely.

Other content I have been known to download are the radio programs of Mark Levin and Fred Thompson, both of which are available from their show websites without charge.

For more libertarian views, programs syndicated by the Genesis Communications Network are available for download free of charge.

When I am wanting some religious programming, I visit Focus On The Family, In Touch Ministries (Atlanta preacher Charles Stanley’s outfit), or even download sermons given by Episcopal priests at the Washington National Cathedral.

For all my lefty political friends and followers, I am sorry I do not have any “progressive” political talk links for you today.  In the past, Ed Schultz provided his radio show as a free download, but he now charges for his content.  The market for left-wing talkers is just not as developed as it is for other points of view.  This week, Al Franken’s Air America went completely bankrupt, and is now off the air.

If you know of any left-wing talkers that provide their content as a free download, let me know, and I will try to mention it on this blog.

In the meantime, thanks for enjoying my “ribbing”.

Sunnyside McDonald’s Will Offer Free Wi-Fi

Promotional Poster At McDonald's of Sunnyside

McDonald’s has 13,000 U.S. locations.  The McDonald’s of Sunnyside is just one of the 11,000 U.S. restaurants that will be offering free Wi-Fi as of January 15, 2010.  AT&T has purchased the company that previously provided Wi-Fi service at thousands of McDonald’s locations.  Under a new arrangement, this service will soon be available for free.

Techies, and Road Warriors can rejoice.  Business travelers looking for a place to stop and check E-mail during the day will have new options for Internet access all over the country without having to purchase Wi-Fi service.

Some other local establishments are offering free Wi-Fi service as well.  They tend to be upper end restaurants, and other businesses in the hospitality industry.  To the best of my knowledge, McDonald’s is the first fast food restaurant in Sunnyside to do this.  With any luck, the move will inspire more businesses to create “hot spots” for Internet access in town.

More and more “smart phones” are coming Wi-Fi enabled, so this should prove a popular service.  In addition, inexpensive netbooks, laptops, and other gadgets can take advantage of the newly provided access.

While many Americans are accustomed to free Wi-Fi at coffee shops and other venues across the country, complimentary Wi-Fi service has been a hit or miss proposition in the Yakima Valley up until now.  McDonald’s move is a welcome change.  This is just one of the great things that we can celebrate in 2010.
