WA State OSPI Pushes Gun Control On Twitter

The Washington State Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, led by Randy Dorn, is the state’s lead agency for education.  They also are advocating for gun control.

On their official Twitter account yesterday they re-tweeted President Obama and Vice President Biden’s post regarding their press conference where new gun control measures were being discussed.

Happening now: President Obama & @VP Biden announce proposals to reduce gun violence: http://at.wh.gov/gRO4m

Retweeted by WA State OSPI

I responded by asking WA State OSPI to stop this, and focus on their organization’s purpose. This resulted in an exchange with another individual on Twitter, and prompted a response from WA State OSPI:

Jason R. Raines ‏@BlogSunnyside

@waOSPI please stop retweeting White House pitches for gun control, this is not your agency’s mission. #wcot #waleg #waelex

Brock Howell ‏@BrockRides

@BlogSunnyside I support @waOSPI. When children get massacred in schools, gun control unfortunately becomes part of their mission. #waleg

Jason R. Raines ‏@BlogSunnyside

@BrockRides @waOSPI Beg to differ; retweeting the White House legislative wishlist is not advancing the cause of education in this state.

Brock Howell ‏@BrockRides

@BlogSunnyside It may help prevent their kids from getting killed. @waOSPI

@BlogSunnyside Student and school safety is part of our mission. A safe school is a positive learning environment. http://bit.ly/Vmp7ev

Jason R. Raines ‏@BlogSunnyside

@waOSPI may I point out that guns are already legally banned at schools? Please redirect your focus. #wcot #waleg

Given that guns are already banned in schools, WA State OSPI apparently wants to control what you do with them at home, or whether you are allowed to have them at all.  Is this what our elected leader of education should be focusing on?

In my opinion, this irrational fear of firearms is due to a failure of the American education system to properly instruct our children.

Children should be taught to have a respect for life, and firearms safety.  When I was a child in a public high school, one of my teachers gave me a rifle and ammunition, and told me to fire.  This was during class, and on the school campus.

My school had an indoor firing range, and fielded a competitive rifle team made up of students firing .22 cal bolt action rifles.

We also received hunter safety instruction, which is a requirement for those wanting to get a hunting license.

Instead of trying to run people’s homes, our schools should be teaching important life skills. Unfortunately, our current crop of educational elites does not see it that way.  They seem to think that government makes better parents than parents.

Electoral College Prediction: Romney 291 – Obama 247

With 11 days to go, I am going to make a prediction on how the Electoral College votes will be distributed.

My prediction: Romney 291, Obama 247

This is just an exercise in fun, and if you wish to offer your own predictions, please respond and let me know.  The only caveat is that you are not allowed to leave any states in “toss up” status.  You must make a prediction as to which way it will go.

Nebraska and Maine potentially split electoral votes between candidates, and if you think that will happen, please let me know.  I don’t think this will happen in 2012, and my prediction shows all votes going to one candidate or the other from each state.

Why Obama Is More Holy Than The Virgin Mary

Obama Campaign Manager Showing Anxiety

The Obama campaign is starting to show signs of serious anxiety following the Supreme Court ruling on Obamacare, and the resulting bounce it is giving Republican Presidential contender Mitt Romney.  This is apparent in a new email from Jim Messina, Campaign Manager, Obama for America.  He sent the message as an appeal to Obama supporters, but states that things are not looking good for Obama.

Here is some of what he said:

Obama-Biden Email Logo

Romney and the Republicans announced yesterday that they brought in more than $100 million in June.

For context, that’s about what we raised in April and May combined.

We’re still tallying our own numbers, but this means their gap is getting wider, and if it continues at this pace, it could cost us the election.

…If we don’t take this seriously now, we risk finding ourselves at a point where there is too much ground to make up.
If Jim Messina and the Obama campaign are taking things “seriously” when sending out this email, I wonder how they feel about today’s jobs numbers showing more Americans went on disability than found new jobs:

Josh Romney Fires Up Washington Republicans

Before Josh Romney started speaking to Republican supporters in Tacoma, the Romney campaign played a video clip of Rick Santorum urging his campaign supporters to back Romney during the Washington State Republican Party Convention.  Delegates and other supporters came to a special reception held just down the street from the convention center in order to hear directly from Romney’s son on Thursday night.

Josh Romney received a very enthusiastic welcome from those assembled.  He spoke proudly of his multiple visits to Washington during this campaign.  Josh said it was a big win during the Washington caucuses held this past March, and helped Romney gain momentum in winning delegates for the nomination.

Josh said part of campaigning is the pressure of knowing that people are owed for the hard work they are doing to get the candidate elected.  He said his Dad is working 18 hours a day campaigning across the country.

Josh said that Romney is keeping pace with Obama, but that if you think about the last four years, you can imagine how bad it would be to have another four years of him.  He also recognized the efforts of Ron Paul and his supporters in doing everything possible to ensure that Obama is defeated in November.

Referring to Obama’s criticism of Mitt Romney for work at Bain Capital, Josh acknowledged that his father was not always successful in every investment, but that he was successful far more often than he wasn’t.  Further, he learned from his failures, and work with the Olympics, and knows what it takes to create jobs to help America.

In comparing that record to Obama, Josh points out that Obama does a “public sector investment” in Solyndra.  Josh finds it interesting that Obama would criticize his father for his investment deals, when he is losing investment money made with other people’s money.

Josh said Mitt is running because of his 18 grandchildren, and could be spending time doing things besides staying in hotel rooms across the country.

He also told of how after the last race, his mother told Mitt that if she ever thought about him running again, he should take her, shake her, and slap her across the face.

Mitt replied, “You also said that after every pregnancy!”

Josh added that there were five children in his family, and he must have said that after each one of them were born.

In concluding, Josh Romney thanked the campaign supporters for working to make Mitt Romney the next President of the United States.

Listen to Josh Romney’s remarks:

Octomom, Obama, and Public Assistance

Nadya Denise Doud-Suleman Guiterrez (born Natalie Denise Suleman), is popularly known as “Octomom”.  She is most widely known for giving birth to octuplets in January 2009.

She is a controversial figure, having used in vitro fertilisation (IVF) in all her pregnancies.  She had six prior children, was unemployed, and on public assistance when she gave birth to her eight youngest children.  Octomom is a high school graduate, has a four-year college degree, and even has taken some graduate level courses.

Suleman gained much attention following the highly unusual birth of eight children.  She received monetary contributions, TV deals, and has been in numerous magazine articles as well.  Now that some of the initial reaction to her unprecedented situation has worn off, she apparently is spiraling back down to the same conditions which allowed her to get pregnant with eight embryos simultaneously in the first place: dependence on government run public assistance programs.

With a record-high 40 million people on food stamps in Obama’s America, and free healthcare being promised in the future, what are the odds of more such Octomom-style debacles taking place?

Patty Murray And The Recovery Summer: Mission Accomplished?

This is a new web video released by U.S. Senate Candidate Dino Rossi.

Coffee Talk With Dino Rossi

Dino Rossi came to Sunnyside, Washington today, and we had a conversation about his campaign at Guerra’s Coffee Co. on South First Street.

U.S. Senate Candidate Dino Rossi with Aaron Guerra, owner of Guerra's Coffee Co. in Sunnyside, WA.

I asked Mr. Rossi how small businesses, such as the one in which we were enjoying some refreshing beverages, could benefit by his election to the U.S. Senate:

Rossi responded by saying “I will be one of the few Senators in Washington D.C. that knows what it is like to sign the front side of a paycheck.”  He went on to describe his own personal experience that includes starting out at the age of 17 working as a janitor.  He said as a business owner, he knows what it is like to work with no salary, and no benefits.  ”If you don’t work, you don’t eat”, said Rossi, about being a small business entrepreneur.

Expressing concerns about the new financial reform bill being passed in Congress, Rossi said it will kill liquidity in banks and financial institutions which provide loans to small businesses.

Rossi pointed out that Patty Murray is proud of the healthcare bill she supported, which will be a $500 billion tax increase, taking money away from small businesses, putting it into government instead, with the I.R.S. being in charge.  The ultimate goal of the program Murray supports is to have a single payer system, which will be run with all the compassion of an I.R.S. agent.  Rossi said that is not the kind of healthcare system he wants, and that most Americans don’t want either.

Murray has never had a private sector job in her life, said Rossi.  Since the 1960′s, 64% of job growth has come from small businesses, and it is increasingly difficult for them to find loans and investors to fund their growth and expansion.  Rossi said that too many in Washington D.C. have no experience as an entrepreneur, or being a business owner, and that it is unrealistic to expect that solutions to our economic problems will come from them.

When asked about the call from some people to simply vote out all the incumbents, Rossi said we must pay attention to how people in office are actually voting, and that we shouldn’t always paint with such a broad brush.  However, he said that “Frankly, both Republicans and Democrats contributed to the out of control spending and growth in government that caused this problem.”

He said that for small businesses to succeed, they need low or modest taxation.  They also need stable, predictable, regulation from government.  Acting in opposition to this, is Senator Patty Murray, who Rossi pointed out, has voted for every single spending bill since 2004.

He said that the uncontrolled spending started under Bush, but has continued on steroids under Obama, with the full support of Patty Murray.  ”We can not stimulate our way to a good economy.  What part of broke does Murray not understand?”, said Rossi.

Rossi raised $1.4 million in one month of campaigning during the last quarter.  Murray raised $1.6 million, but took the entire quarter to do it.  I asked Rossi how competitive he felt his campaign would be, in the context of fundraising.  He said he was fortunate to have so many people contribute to his campaign already, and that he felt confident he would be successful in raising enough to tell his story, and defend himself from attacks.

“Murray has an indefensible record of taxing and spending”, he said.  Although he felt confident about raising enough to tell his story, he also felt that his campaign needs to do even more.  Rossi pointed out that he has over 29,000 people who “like” his page on Facebook, and follow updates from this campaign there.  He is impressed with the tremendous support and communication abilities that Facebook offers.  Facebook supporters used their friends and contacts to turn out a large group of supporters for him at a parade in Skagit County recently.  This all happened at the last-minute, with the supporters spontaneously showing up to march with him during the event.  Supporters also follow him on Twitter @DinoRossiWA, and get updates from his campaign headquarters @DinoRossiHQ.

Rossi pointed out that he has been successful in the past campaigning against an incumbent for State Senate, even when that earlier opponent outspent him by a margin of 20%.  ”The reality is that I have the support of the people with me; Murray’s number one source of fundraising is from lobbyists.”

Before leaving to continue campaigning in eastern Washington, Rossi said that he needs the support of everyone, by going to his campaign website, dinorossi.com, volunteering, knocking on doors, and giving financial support in any amount they are comfortable contributing.  He also said that once elected, he needs people to keep supporting him, and not to abandon him.  He will need input from the community, and wants citizens to stay involved to help implement the major course correction that he and other conservative candidates hope to bring to Washington D.C.

Let South Korea Strike North Korea

No Declaration of War Needed:

They’ve Already Got One

North Korean Torpedo Sank South Korean Naval Ship

When the liberals of the New York Times Editorial board, and conservatives at the Heritage Foundation agree, you know that the common people are about to get royally screwed.  In this case, the common people are those being oppressed under North Korean rule.

The Heritage Foundation posted an article on their website titled U.S. Must Respond Firmly To North Korean Naval Attack.  Meanwhile, the New York Times published an editorial entitled: The Sinking of the Cheonan.

Both groups advocate additional and tougher trade sanctions against North Korea, seeking a resolution from the U.N. Security Council condemning the action, and having China apply diplomatic leverage against North Korea in hopes of getting them to behave more rationally.

An exhaustive multinational study, consisting of both military and civilian experts have concluded that the South Korean ship Cheonan was recently sunk by a North Korean torpedo.  Following the brazen and unprovoked attack by what is believed to be a North Korean submarine, the New York Times has praised South Korea for being “prudent”, and not blaming the North immediately.  They also praised the South for not taking military action as a response.

Allow me to suggest a different course of action.  It is my belief that everyone, from nation states to individuals, always has the right to defend themselves.  South Korea is a fully industrialized economic powerhouse, with an army larger than that of the United States.  They are fully capable of striking into the North, and realizing the long sought goal of unifying the Koreas under a free and representative form of government.

We should let them.  Not only that, we should encourage them to do it.  North Korea is already testing primitive nuclear devices, has a large arsenal of chemical weapons, and for some inexplicable reason, has been removed from our watch list of nations that sponsor terrorism.  The two Koreas are still technically at war, having only a negotiated cease-fire.  Now that North Korea has torpedoed a South Korean ship, the South is fully within its rights to retaliate with full force.

Kim Jong-Il has behaved in unstable ways for many years.  One can argue he is much more a threat to world peace than Saddam Hussein ever was.  We should therefore encourage South Korea to implement our foreign policy of “spreading democracy” by military force, and invasion of other countries.  We have our own military tied down in fighting on two fronts already, so we should step aside and let the capable forces of South Korea take care of the job.  We can provide logistical support and equipment to help make it easier.

Having a fully unified Korea, allied with us, right on China’s border, would be of huge strategic advantage to us.  Naturally, the Chinese may not think so, and therein lies the true danger to the United States.  What if China stops producing goods for Wal-Mart, or lending Obama money for his ever expanding government takeover of our U.S. economy?

So much for that idea, our big-government/multi-national corporate cabal would never go for it.  I might be classified as a dinosaur for saying so, but General Douglas MacArthur had the right idea when he sought to unify the entire Korean Peninsula all those years ago.  It’s now time to finish the job, only this time, we can outsource the job to the people who will actually live there, the Koreans themselves.

Even if the status quo is maintained, with the country of Korea being divided, we should withdraw our Army. If for no other reason than we can not afford to keep our troops there. The Republic of Korea has come a long way since the 1950′s. They can handle North Korea while we support them in other ways.
