Remarks On Gun Rights At Sunnyside Council

Monday night, I made the following remarks about gun rights during the meeting of the Sunnyside City Council.  My thanks to the City Clerk for researching the text of Ordinance No. 15 (passed in 1902).  In the future, I would like to make a visit to the city archives to see some of the other treasures our city’s founders bestowed to us.  It is my great pleasure to serve the people, and promote freedom everywhere I can.

STATEMENT ON GUN RIGHTS, 1/28/13 SUNNYSIDE CITY COUNCIL MEETING

Recent discussion of gun rights has prompted a public response from some officials in our state. These responses include remarks from the governor, the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, our legislators, and also our county sheriff.

Some are begging for more government control over citizens, and think they should be in charge of allowing them to possess firearms, and where (if ever), they should be allowed to carry them. Others advocate for greater freedom, pushing for increased rights of individuals.

Yakima County Sheriff Ken Irwin issued a statement last week in which he cited the U.S. and State of Washington Constitutions. He later clarified that he is opposed to the proposed ban on certain types of firearms that is being put forward by the President and his allies in Congress.

Elected officials take an oath to uphold the federal and state constitutions mentioned by our sheriff. Unfortunately, some municipal government officials in Washington do not always respect that.

For example, on January 15, 2013, at a meeting of the City Council in Oak Harbor, a failed attempt to trample on the 2nd amendment rights of citizens occured. Video of the incident is making the rounds on the Internet.

During that meeting, a Councilman asked a gun rights supporter if he was carrying a firearm in council chambers. He demanded an answer even after the city attorney said the citizen was not obligated to give one. The citizen did choose to answer, and confirmed he has a Concealed Pistol License, and was carrying a firearm.

In response, the councilman made an unconstitutional motion to strip the citizen of his firearm on the spot. The motion failed, causing the Mayor of Oak Harbor to apologize to the citizen for the behavior of some of his colleagues, and spoke to the oath of office that all electeds take. The councilman who made the motion left the meeting rather than stay in a room where citizens exercise their right to bear arms.

I would like to take just a moment to remind my colleagues, and members of the public, just what our oath of office supports, as it relates to gun rights.

The 2nd amendment of the US Constitution states:

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

For those that question whether that applies to individual citizens; can you imagine George Washington leading an army if citizens did not possess firearms?

The other constitution that warrants our attention, is our own Washington State Constitution. Article I, Section 24 has the relevant language on the right to bear arms:

The right of the individual citizen to bear arms in defense of himself, or the state, shall not be impaired, but nothing in this section shall be construed as authorizing individuals or corporations to organize, maintain or employ an armed body of men.

If one is still in doubt, our state constitution is much more explicit in its language that the right to bear arms is an individual right.

This is not a new debate among the people, nor is it the first time restrictions have been proposed by politicians.

Our city founders first regulated the rights of citizens to carry weapons within three months of the city’s founding. Ordinance No. 15 Prohibiting Carrying Concealed Weapons and Fixing Punishment Therefor was passed in 1902. This handwritten ordinance was signed by our first Mayor, James Henderson. One should take note that at the time, the city also did not allow gambling, alcohol, or dancing.

Times have changed since then, and I am not about to suggest we take away our citizen’s guns, anymore than I want to take away their dance halls or their beer! In over 110 years as a city, our citzens have repeatedly demonstrated at the ballot box that they prefer more freedom over less freedom.

In the present day, citizens of Sunnyside may obtain a Concealed Pistol License by submitting an application through our local police department. I encourage everyone to do this, even if they do not own a firearm.

By exercising their rights, citizens can send a message to politicians that they do not want more government restrictions on personal freedoms. When more citizens apply for a Concealed Pistol License, it demonstrates that the people are serious about maintaining their rights and personal safety, as outlined by both our federal and state constitutions.

Bulldozers for McKenna Lots of Fun at Sunshine Days Parade

It was fun joining other supporters of Rob McKenna for Governor in the Sunshine Days Parade today.  Thanks also to State Representative David Taylor for having his own entry in the parade.  It is great to see the high school bands, beauty queens, cheerleaders, and businesses supporting a local event.

“Bulldozers for McKenna” happily rolled through Sunnyside during the Sunshine Days Parade today.

Bonnie Dunbar Statue Unveiled In Sunnyside

Bonnie Dunbar took time for members of the public to have their picture taken following unveiling of the newest statue in Sunnyside. In this picture, my daughter is seated in front of Bonnie Dunbar.

This morning, a ceremony was held to unveil the newest bronze statue placed near Central Park in Sunnyside.  Dignitaries from state and local offices attended, making brief comments.  Also, members of the Dunbar family, including Bonnie Dunbar herself participated in the event.  Bonnie Dunbar’s niece received the honor of pulling the blanket off the statue to unveil the first bronze statue in Sunnyside commemorated during the lifetime of the person it is modeled after.

A representative from the governor’s office read a proclamation, in which today is officially recognized as Bonnie Dunbar Day in the State of Washington.  Sunnyside Mayor Mike Farmer also issued a proclamation declaring it Bonnie Dunbar Day in the City of Sunnyside as well.  Sunnyside School Board Member Lorenzo Garza encouraged students to pay attention to the new statue and learn about Bonnie Dunbar while going to and from the swimming pool.

County Commissioner Rand Elliott, Councilmembers Jim Restucci, Craig Hicks, and Theresa Hancock all attended the event.  Interim City Manager Frank Sweet and Sunnyside Community Hospital CEO John Gallagher were on hand as well.  Members of the VFW Post and other veterans provided an Honor Guard.

Members of The Bronze Society, which organized the support of sponsors and patrons to pay for the statue, also were recognized during the event.  My apologies to everyone that I am failing to mention, it was a good turnout for the unveiling this morning.

Following the unveiling, Bonnie Dunbar graciously allowed members of the public to have their picture taken with her for quite some time.

State Rep Taylor’s Endorsement of Candidate Shows Independent Streak

Washington 15th District State Representative David Taylor (R-Moxee), is showing an independent streak in making the announcement he is endorsing Shahram Hadian for the office of governor.  His district includes Sunnyside, and much of eastern Yakima County.  He made the announcement in a press release, with a handful of other state representatives.

In an interview with this blog, Mr. Taylor states he made the endorsement because many people kept asking him who he supports for governor.  He said, “I view primaries as an opportunity for individuals to look at candidates to see who most closely matches up with their beliefs.”

Taylor said once Washington’s top two primary is over, he will look at who is left and decide who to support then; adding that in his opinion, state agencies are out of control and need to be reigned in.

Told that Washington State Republican Party Chairman Kirby Wilbur has called Rob McKenna the “only credible” candidate for governor, Taylor was then asked why he is breaking ranks with many in state Party leadership to endorse Hadian. He said, “This is not the first time I have broken ranks with Kirby Wilbur, and other Republicans in the state.”  He went on to explain that he does not view statewide contests as being different from national ones.  Taylor pointed out that many Republicans have shown support for Ron Paul, and other candidates, not just to Mitt Romney, during the nomination process.

Taylor was then asked if he would support McKenna, if he is running against Jay Inslee in the general election.  His response: “There is no doubt I will support McKenna over Inslee if those are the choices in the general election.  I remember Jay Inslee when he was the Congressman for this area, and I would never cast a vote for Inslee.”

Editor’s note: Acting as an individual, I have officially endorsed Rob McKenna for Governor.  My endorsement can be found on McKenna’s website: http://www.robmckenna.org/blog/2012/04/experience-matters

Here is the text of Representative David Taylor’s endorsement:

July 11, 2012 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

July 9, 2012

Representatives Brad Klippert, David Taylor, Jason Overstreet and Matt Shea Endorse Shahram Hadian for Governor

“We are honored to give our support and endorsement to Shahram Hadian as he runs for Governor of Washington State. Without question, he is a man of integrity and character willing to take tough stands based on Republican principles.

Shahram is steadfastly pro-life, pro-marriage and will fight to stop the implementation of Obamacare in Washington State. Specifically, he has committed to sign the Healthcare Freedom Act (HB 1946), opting Washington out of Obamacare.

“‘The Constitution is not an instrument for the government to restrain the people, it is an instrument for the people to restrain the government.’ When Patrick Henry made that statement he understood that an all-powerful central government was the enemy of freedom. Mr. Hadian is a staunch defender of property rights and someone who has the titanium backbone to push back against the onslaught of state and federal regulations that are strangling our economy. We need people now, more than ever, who will take government out of the way so small businesses can get Washington working again. This is how we will restore our Constitutional Republic at the State level. We firmly believe Shahram Hadian is the right person to help lead that fight.”

Please join us in supporting Shahram Hadian for Governor.

Confederate War Veteran Buried Near White Swan

From an informational marker at Fort Simcoe:

A LAST REQUEST

Born August 4, 1841, Ruffin Thomson was a young man in Mississippi when the Civil War broke out.  He enlisted in the Confederate Army and was wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg.  In 1864, he was appointed Second Lieutenant and ended the war at Greensboro, North Carolina, in 1865.

Following his military service, he became a medical doctor, married, and eventually settled in Florida with his family.  While there, he was offered an appointment as clerk at the Yakama Indian Agency.  He arrived here at Fort Simcoe in February 1888 at the age of 46.  Within a month after his arrival, he became ill and died.  At his request he was buried here, near the oak grove, “where the sun shines brightly from heaven and the birds sing over my grave.”

On Father’s Day, 1966, a new grave marker was placed commemorating Thomson’s military service.  Water from the Pearl River (which bordered his family farm), Lake Wier (near his Florida home) and the Mississippi River was poured on the grave site.  Soil from Mississippi and Florida was mixed with the earth of Washington and the Yakama Nation, and spread over the grave site.

Fort Simcoe (near modern day White Swan) was established by the U.S. Army in the 1850′s to help keep the peace between settlers and various groups of Indians that make up the Yakama Nation.  During the Civil War, the Army left the fledgling installation.  Following the war, the Yakama Indian Agency (created by the federal government) operated a school and other institutions at the site.

The site is an oasis, with oak trees sustained through natural springs which bubble to the surface in the area.  Because of the water source, this area was highly prized by both natives and settlers.  The Army located their fort here because of this strategic value.

My personal connections:

During my Army service in Korea, I was assigned to the 9th Infantry Regiment (which traces its history in part through Fort Simcoe).  This is the regiment that was tasked with founding Fort Simcoe.  This is history I can personally identify with.  In addition, at the time the fort was founded, the unit came from Virginia.  When the Civil War broke out, officers and soldiers ended up fighting on both sides of the conflict.

As a native of Tennessee, I have ancestry that fought for both the North and the South.  Realizing that men left Fort Simcoe, Washington,  in order to join units that would eventually fight each other, was an emotional moment for me.  It is hard to imagine such a thing happening with our current military, but it is important to realize how vital it is to have a unifying national culture we can all support.

A number of the officers serving at Fort Simcoe went on to have prominent careers in the U.S. Civil War.  I encourage you to make the drive to Fort Simcoe to learn more about the site for yourself.

Fort Simcoe is currently a Washington State Park, and is about one hour’s drive from Sunnyside.

Dino Rossi Introduces Romney’s Son To Supporters In Tacoma

Rossi Introduces Josh Romney to Campaign Supporters

This week all Republicans in Washington are watching what is going on in Tacoma.  It is the Washington State Republican Party Convention, with delegates and supporters  gathered from all around, in part to select delegates to the party’s national convention that will be held in Tampa, Florida later this year.

Thursday evening, supporters of Mitt Romney were invited to a special reception at a nearby hotel, where they had a chance to hear from his son Josh.  But first, they were treated to an introduction by Washington Republican stalwart: Dino Rossi.

Rossi is Co-Chair of Washington’s Romney campaign.  He says that in every email he sends out, he includes the phrase “Saving the free world” because that is what it is all about.  Rossi pointed out 50,000 people turned out for Republican caucuses in March, and voted for an overwhelming Romney victory in our state.

Gingrich and Santorum campaigns are fully behind Romney, and are supporting a Romney slate of delegates for the national convention.  Rossi alluded to “Brand X” supporting another slate (a reference to Ron Paul supporters who are trying to elect delegates as well.)

Rossi states that we have a businessman running against a man who has never had a real job in his life. He elaborated saying, “I don’t consider being a community agitator for ACORN to be a real job.”  He concluded by saying he is excited about Romney running for President.

Raines Endorsed By Former Valley Mayor

A former mayor in the Yakima Valley is endorsing Raines for Sunnyside City Council.  The following letter was published 10/03/11 by the Yakima Herald-Republic (yakima-herald.com).

Back Raines in Sunnyside

To the editor — Jason Raines is running for Sunnyside City Council, Position 5.

Jason believes public safety should be the No. 1 priority of local government. A community thrives only when its citizens are able to live and work in safe neighborhoods, not fearing for the safety of their children, homes and businesses. Jason will work hard to achieve safety for all Sunnyside citizens, which is why he has earned the endorsement of the Sunnyside Police Officers Guild.

As a former Army captain, Jason knows firsthand how to be a team player, and that goals are accomplished only when people work together. Jason will work tirelessly with other Yakima Valley governments, as well as citizens and organizations within the Sunnyside community, to provide safe neighborhoods, quality infrastructure and a community people will be proud to call their home. A father of three, Jason cares about creating a great environment for Sunnyside’s youth.

Jason brings a no-nonsense approach to his decision-making, listens to all points of view and values everyone at the table. Jason Raines is exactly whom Sunnyside needs to move the community toward prosperity, and as a former Tieton mayor, I’m proud to endorse him for Sunnyside City Council, Position 5.
